Three-Car Crash Kills 1, Injures 3 in Crystal Lake

One person was killed and three other people were hospitalized following a three-car crash on Pyott Road south of Rakow Road at 5:45 p.m. Monday, April 28, according to police.

Two cars collided head-on before a third vehicle crashed into them, police said. The driver of one vehicle became entrapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by Crystal Lake Fire Rescue personnel, police said, while the driver of another vehicle died of injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead by the McHenry County Coroner's Office. 

Authorities are not releasing the names of individuals involved in the crash while they notify their families, according to police.

Based on their initial investigation, police believe a four-door Toyota was traveling south on Pyott Road from Rakow Road when it crossed into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into a four-door Honda. The third car, a Chevrolet Tahoe, was also going south on Pyott Road before it was struck by the Honda, police said. 

The driver of the Honda was the victim who died at the scene, according to police. The Toyota's driver was transported to Centegra-Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry, with life-threatening injuries, while the driver and passenger in the Tahoe were transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with injuries police believe were not life-threatening.

Police closed down Pyott Road after the crash and emergency crews remained on scene several hours later. They were expected to reopen the roadway at 9:30 p.m., according to police.

The Crystal Lake Police Department and McHenry County Coroner's Office are still investigating the incident. No charges had been filed as of Monday night, according to police.
