FamiliesETC/Parent Mentor Program

Mentors work one on one with a parent to establish and assist with Personal & Project Goals, Family Advocacy and School Accommodations Development/Support Project Goals- Tasks related to accessing community resources, or boosting student academic success. Processes required to start, maintain, or complete services needed by the parent, child, or whole family are also included. Example of related project goals: Gathering: materials, evaluations, IEP/504 assistance, retrieving records & Organizational planning and skill building. Personal Goals- Helping the parent become confident during skill building, by offering support during a process the parent feels is difficult. Example of related personal goals: increasing computer literacy, formulating parent perspective documents/creating timeline charts with evaluations, diagnosis & referrals, understanding mental health or school assistance language. Family Advocacy - Advocacy in the school with a parent during accommodations planning. This feature assists by prepping the parent ahead of meetings, co-developing a plan to connect their family with their student’s academic team by bridging the parent-school language gap. Family Advocacy & School Accommodations Development/Support Groups Parent Advocacy Group– Helps parents understand the boundaries and limitations of educational law and the successes behind a proactive team approach through effective diplomatic communication. This platform also gives parents an opportunity to address & problem solve concerns with services affecting their child’s social, emotional, and behavioral goals at home and in the community.
