Looking for a fun family outing this holiday weekend? The Crystal Lake Park District and Chicago Kite are hosting a Kite Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, at Lippold Park soccer field on Route 176, just west of Route 14 in Crystal Lake This free event is a perfect way for families to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend. Kite fest includes performances by Team Chicago Kite, learn-to-fly lessons, family kite fly time and single-line kite flying. The first 250 children will receive a free kite and a learn-to-fly lesson. Keep your eyes to the skies as kites of all sizes will be flying, some as large as 90 feet! West Beach in Crystal Lake is officially ready for Summer 2013. The former 31-year-old bath house at what's known as Crystal Lake's smaller beach, located at 2330 Lake Avenue in Lakewood, was razed last August. Crystal Lake Park District will use state grant to renovate and improve Woodscreek Park, located at the corner of Golf Course and Ackman roads.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday announced a $15.3 million investment in local park projects throughout Illinois, and one Crystal Lake park stands to receive a piece of that allottment. Crystal Lake Park District will receive a $400,000 state grant and plans to use the money toward renovating and expanding Woodscreek Park, 1420 Willow Tree Dr., according to Jenny Leech, public information coordinator for the park district. Woodscreek Park is a popular, well-used park located on the southwest corner of Golf Course and Ackman roads on the city's southside. The Crystal Lake Park District is holding its annual Used Bike Sale this Saturday at the Rotary Building, 431 N. Walkup Ave., Crystal Lake. The sale is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., but buyers should consider arriving near the start time as bicycles tend to sell quickly. Fee for selling bikes is 25% of sale price, and all bikes must be priced a minimum of $5, according to the park district. The yearly sale provides a good opportunity for residents to sell their used bikes, or buy a bargain bikes for the whole family. Selling a bike is easy: just drop off a bike the night before, or the morning of the sale. Crystal Lake resident Maggie Tremblay recently the won the title of Miss Crystal Lake 2013. The Miss Crystal Lake 2013 pageant was held March 22, at Hannah Beardsley Middle School in Crystal Lake. The Little Miss pageant was held during the same night. In the Miss Crystal Lake race, Vanessa Avitia won Miss Congeniality, and Rachel Siemon was named first runner-up and Miss Photogenic, according to Jenny Leech, public information coordinator for the Crystal Lake Park District. Anya (last name not given) won Little Miss Crystal Lake 2013, and Ainsley won Little Miss Photogenic. The park should be renovated and not replaced. It should NOT include a splash pad. As was voiced by a neighbors who attended the last meeting where we were told we would have a voice. Apparently based on the plans the neighborhood voice does not matter.   more ›
