Road Conditions Worsen as Snow Continues to Fall

A winter storm advisory is in effect for McHenry County through 9 p.m tonight.

Road Conditions Worsen as Snow Continues to Fall

Some roads have become impassable in McHenry County.

It could be a treacherous commute for many taking to area roads this evening.  Roadway conditions continue to worsen as heavy snow falls throughout the area with as much as eight inches of accumulation expected in areas. A winter storm warning remains in effect through midnight for McHenry County.   The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is advising motorists to avoid Route 31 between Crystal Lake and MchHenry due to a hill that has become impassable.  Motorists were also getting stuck on the hill on Haligus Road just south of Lakewood Road in Lake in the Hills, according to a comment on the Algonquin-LITH Patch Facebok page.   The Northwest Herald is reporting treacherous conditions on Route 14 and Route 176 as well. Illinois Tollway Snowplows Out in Full Force this Evening, Friday

Illinois Tollway provides winter driving reminders for those taking to the roadways this evening and Friday.

The Illinois Tollway is preparing to mobilize its full fleet of 183 snowplows in response to the snowfall expected to begin early this evening and continue into Friday morning. The Tollway's Snow Operations Center will be open this afternoon to manage the agency's systemwide response. "The Illinois Tollway is ready to handle the snow expected to begin early this evening throughout our system," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur.  "It is possible that this storm could impact drivers this evening as well as tomorrow's morning rush hour, so we ask our customers to drive safely and allow enough time to arrive at their destinations." NWS: Roadways Could Be 'Treacherous' Tonight

The National Weather Service predicts wind gusts as high as 35 mph and over eight inches of snow for some areas.

UPDATE 5 P.M. Jan. 12: The McHenry County Sheriff's Department sent out a traffic advisory at 4:39 p.m. Jan. 12 letting people know they should expect their commute to take two to three times longer than normal.  The advisory noted traffic was very heavy on roadways.  ---- UPDATE 4 P.M. Jan. 12 Road conditions are expected to worsen as the afternoon wears on and as many take to the roadways for their evening commute. Police and emergency personnel stayed busy this afternoon with several reports of vehicle run-offs, vehicles spinning out on roadways and crashes in McHenry County, according to police scanner reports.
