CL Officials: New Cement Wall by Veteran Acres Not 'Aesthetically Pleasing'

Crystal Lake city officials are working with the McHenry County Transportation Department to determine how appearance of the new wall could be improved.

As road construction work progresses on Walkup Road and Route 176, a cement wall adjacent to the road and bikepath near Veteran Acres is catching the eye of city officials - and not in a good way. Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley told city council members during the recent  city council meeting that people have complained about the aesthetics of the cement wall and adjacent bike patch just north of Route 176. The wall is in what city officials call "a high profile area" and partial blocks the scenic view of Veteran Acres pond. "We've drafted a letter and sent it to the county, and I'm happy to say that the county has been receptive (to our concerns)," Shepley said. County officials have asked for suggestions on how to make the wall look …

Why wasn't this discussed and agreed upon beforehand?! Why did they think a wall was necessary? I say knock it down...why would you want to put up a solid concrete wall that blocks one of the many beautiful aspects of Veteran Acres...the pond!! Dumb...   more ›

Does anyone really know what she was thinking, feeling or going through? Does anyone honestly feel they can begin to imagine the shoes she walked in to make her feel the way she mayy have felt? Is it just people assuming it was due to bullying or does someone actually know this is the reason why it happened? Please remember to be respectful to the family and friends effected by this tragic loss…   more ›

Snowfall Sends Sledders, Snowboarders to Area Hills

Area children and adults took advantage of freshly fallen snow Saturday, Feb. 2, and visited area sledding hills including Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake.

The Friday evening snowfall wasn't too impressive - only somewhere between 2 to 3 inches - but it was enough to send area children, teens and adults flocking to area sledding hills on Saturday. Veteran Acres Park, 431 Walkup Rd., Crystal Lake, was packed with sledders and  snowboarders. By Saturday afternoon, much of the snow had been worn away and the grass could easily be seen. But the hillside was slick and icy, and sledders had no problem gaining speed on their way down the slope. The National Weather Service snowfall totals for Northern Illinois reported 3.2 inches of snow recorded in Woodstock, about 2.4 inches in Bull Valley and 2.6 inches measured in Algonquin. No recordings were available for Crystal Lake and Cary.

Discover a Hidden Gem in Crystal Lake that you may have driven by and never known it existed. Or maybe you have not visited this interesting spot in years. Come along for this unique journey.

The Crystal Lake Park District opened its new Acorn Alley Playground and Splashpad this summer and kids have already begun to splash. The playground is on the west side of the park on Walkup Avenue at Veteran Acres, just up from the Walkup/Route 176 intersection. There has been a playground at that end of the park since the 1960’s. It is a “well attended, well used playground,” said Jenny Leech, Public Information Coordinator for the Crystal Lake Park District. The park is open from dawn to dusk daily. The splashpad is basically a system of built in underground sprinklers and shooting jets of water over a safe surface. The splashpad will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and closed between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and 3:30…
