Three Oaks Sledding Hill Open for Fun

With the arrival of snow, the sledding hill at Three Oaks Recreation Area is officially open.

The arrival of snow - and more snow- finally marks the opening of the sledding hill at Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake. According to city officials, and the sign at Three Oaks, the sledding hill is now open. Lack of snow over the past two winters has prevented residents from getting much use from the slope. Parking is free for residents, and non-residents should be prepared to pay parking fees, according to the Three Oaks website. Restroom facilities are available on site. Sledding is permitted during regular park areas, sunrise to sunset. No supervision is available - adults and children should sled at their own risk. Snowboards, skis, ramps and jumps are not permitted. Three Oaks Recreation Area is located at 5517 Route 14, …

Crystal Lake Receives Governor's Hometown Award

City receives state honor for building Three Oaks Recreation Area.

  The city of Crystal Lake has been named a recipient of the 2012 Governor's Hometown Award, Mayor Aaron Shepley announced on Tuesday. The city was named a Project Winner by the state for work done converting Vulcan Lakes gravel pit into Three Oaks Recreation Area. Crystal Lake was selected from competing communities with populations of 25,001 to 70,000 for the award, according to the state. "That's a very high honor to receive," Shepley said at the city council meeting. "This award reflects on the staff- they poured their heart and soul into this project, and so did (Councilman) Mr. Dawson.....This will be a facility that will continued to be enjoyed for decades to come."   Planning a picnic, or looking for someplace fun to go on Labor Day? Here's a list of what's opened, and what's closed for the weekend and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, 2012. in Crystal Lake and Cary. Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Route 14, Crystal Lake Beach area is open. Boat rentals available, plenty of room for picnics and fishing.  Beach area will be staff based on lifeguard availability from 10 a.m. to noon in the shallow area, and from noon to 6:30 p.m. full swimming area on Labor Day weekend.
