MCCD: Owl Prowl, Scavenger Hunt, Family Exploration Programs

No need to stay cooped inside this winter (especially with this warmer weather). The McHenry County Conservation District has several adventurous nature activities planned for January.

  There's no better way to beat cabin fever than to grab your coat, boots and adventurous spirit and march into the great outdoors. Not all animals sleep through winter. Many are busy searching for food, shelter and mates. The McHenry County Conservation District has several outdoor programs planned for January that range from searching for owls to learning about animal tracks. Here's a list of upcoming events: Friday, Jan. 11; Free for residents 7 to 8:30 p.m. Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Rd., Crystal Lake Simultaneous "Owl Prowls" will be held Friday night, one for adults (14 years & older) and a separate prowl for children age 6-13. Get 'Hooked on Fishing' Sunday at the Hollows

Anyone can fish without a license during this fun outdoor event coinciding with Illinois' Free Fishing Days.

Largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie and rainbow trout. Lake Atwood at the Hollows in Cary has a bounty of fish species to keep avid fishermen reeling.  The "Get Hooked on Fishing" program offers a perfect incentive to grab your poles, bobbers and fishing partners and make your way to the Hollows, 3804 Route 14, Cary. Bring the whole family out from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, June 10, for "Get Hooked on Fishing" demonstrations, prizes and more. No fishing licenses needed as the event is held during Illinois Free Fishing Days, June 8 to 11.   Adult supervision of children is required. Pre-registration is preferred. People can register on-line at the McHenry County Conservation District website or by calling 815-479-5779.
