Saturday's SleepOut event will raise funds, awareness for the homeless.
With the McHenry County PADS bringing the third annual SleepOut for Shelter to Crystal Lake this Saturday, we felt that another look at the video of a local homeless man, Steve, was warranted. The video, captured by Robin Pendergrast, shows a brief but strong look at decisions the homeless have to make every day. SleepOut for Shelter will take place this Saturday, May 12, at Immanuel Lutheran School in Crystal Lake. Event participants will spend the night outside in tents, boxes or cars to raise awareness and money. Through the collection of pledges for spending one night outside the comfort of their home, participants will help homeless individuals in their search for shelter and a new beginning. This spring with the state of the economy headlining news across the country, keeping a job, paying the mortgage and staying out of debt is constantly on everyone’s mind. McHenry County residents are no exception—some being one paycheck away from disaster. Homelessness no longer discriminates in who it labels. Those once considered well-off are finding themselves downsized out of a job, unable to pay their mortgage or feed their family. Embarrassment often keeps these individuals from reaching out to family and friends and sometimes there is no one to reach out to. PADS SleepOut for Shelter draws a crowd in only its second year.
High winds and a few rain drops weren't enough to keep the Pioneer Center's SleepOut for Shelter from being a success. In its second year, Saturday's event brought in over 300 participants and raised about $60,000 to help end homelessness. Set up in two official locations—Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake and Petersen Park in McHenry—people came out to enjoy the entertainment, sleep in tents and even boxes, and to raise money for McHenry County PADS, a division of the Pioneer Center. "We've done a good job of getting the word out.
