The Sandy Hook school shootings had a profound effect on columnist Elizabeth Fish. The New Year offers the opportunity for change.
The Newtown shootings have affected me even more so than Columbine, the movie theatre shootings in Colorado, or any of the dozens of other shootings that have been in the news this year. Newtown really hit me very hard. The fact that a person went to a local elementary school, shot his way in and killed every adult and child in his way, for little, if any, apparent reason is devastating. Maybe it is because I have a first grade child at a local elementary school. And there was little that could have been done at Sandy Hook or any other elementary school to prevent such a tragedy. I still get teary thinking about the shooting and cannot fathom how President Barack Obama named each victim in his speech at Newtown days after the shooting. …

Charity scammers strike after violent tragedies such as the Colorado theater shootings and now the Newtown school shooting and the Better Business Bureau wants consumers to be on alert. The BBB, serving Chicago and Northern Illinois, is warning consumers of the possibility of phony charity solicitations, supposedly on behalf of the families of victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown last Friday. According to reports, emails have been circulating asking for donations in the name of the young victims in the Dec. 14 shooting. The president is scheduled to attend a 7 p.m. interfaith vigil to meet the families of those killed in Friday's school shooting and to thank first responders.

A gunman shoots at staff, children at a Newtown (CT) elementary school.
The gunman who is believed to have shot and killed 27 people including 18 children at the Sandy Elementary School has been found dead inside the school. Authorities have said the FBI and New Jersey State Police were assisting by searching the New Jersey home of the 20-year-old gunman's father. NBC Channel 4 reported at 2:15 p.m. that law enforcement sources have told them the gunman's mother has been found dead in her residence. Her hometown has not been disclosed. The Newtown tragedy left us all very profoundly affected...more so than the previous mass shootings. I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I think one reason is because the victims were just so young and innocent...Children that age don't even understand the concept of meaningless violence, and yet they were on the receiving end...That hurts so much to think about that.
