Joyce Elizabeth Dwyer, 79, longtime resident of Crystal Lake, peacefully passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013, at her home. Born April 10, 1934 in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Lois (Lane) Grismer. After the death of her mother at a young age, she was raised by her father and step-mother, Mary Grismer. Joyce was a loving mother and cherished friend and enjoyed gardening and reading. She was a member of the community choir, which she helped found, and sang in the choir at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church for over 30 years. She was a member of P.E.O. Women’s Organization, St. Jude Guild and Knit Wits. Joyce was instrumental with her late husband, Bill, and friends in the founding of Crystal Lake Gala and 4th of …

Rock jam band Blues Traveler brought its elaborate live show to the Raue Center for the Arts this past Sunday.
One of the most anticipated acts in the Raue's season, rock jam band Blues Traveler tore down the house to a packed to capacity theater, Sunday night. The group rolled through fan favorites and nationwide hits like "But Anyway", "Hook", and even brought out American Idol's ninth season runner-up Crystal Bowersox to help sing along with the group to "Run-Around". Getting ready to release a new album and celebrate 25 years as band, Blues Traveler showed the Raue why this band has been going strong through the years.

Literary duo reads to coffee shop crowd
T. Paul Lowry and Amy Ferraro read short stories to the audience at Conscious Cup during the Get Lit (erary) event Thursday. They chose "Pot of Gold" by John Cheever and "Miss Temptation" by Kurt Vonnegut. "Pot of Gold" can be found in the 1978 short story collection, The Stories of John Cheever. "Miss Temptation" is a short story that was published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1956 and was collected in an anthology by Vonnegut, Welcome to the Monkey House. According to Conscious Cup owner Michael Shipley, the coffee shop will be hosting Pink Cafe—a volunteer registration for the 5K this October in Cary by the American Cancer Society—March 13. The Nutcracker Ballet at the Raue Center brought over 100 performers.
The Nutcracker Ballet at the Raue Center in Crystal Lake dazzled the audience with beautiful choreography. The Berkshire Ballet Theatre performed last Saturday with a cast of over 100 dancers and scenes filled with beauty, sheer joy, suspense and more. The Nutcracker is based on the story, "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice," written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Mariue Petipa choreographed the story into a ballet, basing it on a revision by Alexander Dumas, a well known French author. The storyline is of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads. Williams Street Get Lit Series features "SantaLand Diaries" by David Sedaris.
The Williams Street introduces Get Lit(erary) Series, an ongoing reading series with a presentation of "SantaLand Diaries." They had the crowd laughing two nights, December 16 & 17 at the Raue Center in Crystal Lake. Admission was free and the bar was open with drinks available for purchase. "Santaland Diaries" was the story that launched David Sedaris' career. This was a reading performance of Sedaris' funny encounters working as an elf in Macy's Santaland. Producing Director, T. Paul Lowry, of the Raue Center for The Arts' in-house production company, Williams Street Repertory was very proud of his group, saying, "they were ready in 2 rehearsals." Storytime Series brings families to theater.
Storytime Series at the Raue Center ran Saturdays in December. A fun time for families, it was free admission to the public. Special guest storytellers each week read stories to children and families. Hot chocolate and treats such as candy canes, cookies and cupcakes were also provided to the guests. This past weekend, 15-20 children attended and guest story tellers Amy Ferraro and Chris Davis provided the readings. The books read this week were: How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore, The Snow Must Go On! by Molly Wigand and Santa Knows by Cynthia and Greg Smith.
