Newsweek Ranks Area High Schools

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

Newsweek has ranked Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge high schools among the top high schools in the United States.  For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the United States and about 2,500 schools responded in 2013. Cary-Grove High School was ranked as the 733rd best high school in the country while Prairie Ridge High School was ranked as the 767th best high school in the United States.  Crystal Lake Central High School was not included in the rankings. You can see the details about local high school rankings, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. Prairie Ridge Gymnastics' Team Takes Second at State

The state meet was held over the weekend in Palatine.

Prairie Ridge's co-op gymnastics team placed second at the state meet at Palatine High School over the weekend. Lyons High School in LaGrange claimed the state title with a total score of 149.625. Prairie Ridge had a total score of 149.300, according to results posted on the Illinois High School Associations website.  Helping Prairie Ridge to their second place finish was Rachel Underwood, a sophomore, who placed third in the vault and second in the uneven parallel bars; and Riley Mahoney, a sophomore, who placed fifth in the balance beam, eighth in the floor exercise, and sixth in the vault, according to the IHSA.  Palatine's Fremd High School placed third at the state meet with a total score of 146.050 and Winnetka's New Trier High …

Several Crystal Lake, Cary Wrestlers Qualify for State Wrestling Tournament

The state tournament will be held from Feb. 14 to 16.

Several Crystal Lake and Cary wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament this past weekend after competing at sectional meets, according to the IHSA website.  Area wrestlers competed at sectional meets in Antioch and Barrington over the past weekend.  Cary-Grove's Michael Cullen, a sophomore, won the 113-pound title at the Barringrton meet while Crystal Lake Central's Andrew Marsden, a sophomore, won the 160-pound title at the Antioch meet.  Three Crytal Lake South wrestlers qualified with second place finishes at the Barrington sectional, including: junior Nick Gil at 126 pounds, sophomore Eric Barone at 132 pounds and senior Nick Peters at 138 pounds. It's a big prom weekend for area schools. Crystal Lake South and Prairie Ridge students will start the weekend off with their proms on Friday and Central students will shimmy and shake the night away on Saturday. And no doubt, those cameras will be flashing. We want to give you the chance to show off your awesome dresses (and tuxes) here on Patch. Crystal Lake High Graduates Excelling at Next Level

Former local students are graduating or receiving high honors in college.

Gabrielle Ethier, a Mathematics major from Crystal Lake, graduated in the Dec. 17 commencement ceremony held at University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Williams Fieldhouse. The December graduation was the largest graduation, with 586 graduate and undergraduate students receiving degrees. University of Wisconsin-Platteville is settled in a historic mining town near the Iowa and Illinois borders and enrolls nearly 8,000 students. It is an institution whose mission is to produce intellectually astute individuals who will participate in society as competent professionals and knowledgeable citizens. Central Wrestlers Bring Home the Hardware

All three schools competed this weekend in Champaign.

Crystal Lake Central brought home plenty of Class 2A hardware with a championship, a runner-up medal and a third-place finish from its five wrestlers. At 195, Gage Harrah needed only 1:44 to dispose of his first three opponents. He pinned Andrew White of Nazareth Academy in :21 in the opening round, Trey Pempilton of Freeport in :35 of the quarter finals and Oliver Newton of Geneseo at :48 of the semifinals. In the championship bout, Joey Valdivia of Grayslake Central made Harrah work for his crown as the Crystal Lake Central champion earned a 6-2 decision. Fabulous Freshmen Help Give Wolves Third-Place Trophy

Prairie Ridge’s fabulous freshmen of Rachael Underwood and Riley Mahoney helped deliver the Wolves their first state trophy with a third-place score of 148.175. “I am very happy,” Prairie Ridge coach Lee Battaglia said. “Our highest score ever and third in the state. That’s just fantastic. We had a few minor misses, but they did a great job. And we have almost the entire team coming back next year.” Prairie Ridge should come into next year as the favorite with Underwood, who was third in the all-around with a 38.10 and Mahoney, who was sixth with a 37.75 as the anchors. Prairie Ridge has an Up-And-Coming Gymnast in Mahoney

Finishes second in the all-around at the very competitive Lake Forest Invite on Saturday

It's really the perfect place to hang out if you want to be a gymnastics star in high school. It's called the Crystal Lake Gymnastics Training Center. And somewhere in the building you are bound to run into the owneer Lee Bataglia. And that's clearly where Bataglia ran into a promising gymnast named Riley Mahoney. She wasn't quite ready for high school but that didn't mean she didn't know what she was doing. You see this is a girl who was ready to hit the mats at age two. "I really wanted to do it,'' Mahoney said. "I kept asking my my mom if I could do it. I started taking classes." Mahoney is one gymnast who has put her time in. On Saturday night in Lake Forest, Mahoney and Prairie Ridge took on two-time defending champion Carmel Catholic…

GALLERY: 6A Champions Welcomed Home

Prairie Ridge holds a celebration for the new state champs.

The Prairie Ridge football team were welcomed back to school with a celebration in the school's gymnasium. The school's students and staff, along with PR fans, cheered the new 6A state champions, after the Wolves wiped out Peoria Richwoods to cap off their magical season.
