Students Have a Field Day at Prairie Grove

Children participate in fun, team building activities to celebrate end of schol year.

It was only one afternoon of fun and games intended to build students' team skills and get some exercise. But, for Prairie Grove Elementary School physical education teacher Jackie Camporese, the Field Day festivities held Friday, June 1, were the culmination of nearly two years of planning. "I wanted to plan an end-of-the-year event to get all the kids together," said Camporese, of Cary. "As I'm walking around and see the kids smiling and laughing I know it's a success." Camporese joined the Consolidated School District 46 staff last year. That's when she began thinking of activities and games for this year's special day entitled "Battle for the Beads." Many schools hold races and competitions on field or olympic days and award prizes to …

GALLERY: Holocaust Museum Promotes Tolerance

Prairie Grove opened its doors to the public to showcase the students' Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Prairie Grove Jr. High School created a Holocaust Memorial Museum and opened it to the public this week. The museum featured original projects by the students, in memory and memorial of the holocaust. Eighth-grade language arts teacher Kate Bieschke first started creating the museum three years ago, although the Holocaust unit and student projects began six years ago. After studying the Holocaust for several weeks, students put together projects in memorial and remembrance. Past projects include reconstruction of a boxcar, dioramas of concentration camps, memorials and poetry.

Prairie Grove Promotes Tolerance With Holocaust Museum

Prairie Grove Junior High School students will host a Holocaust Memorial Museum, open to the public, from May 24-26.

For the past three years, eighth-grade language arts teacher Kate Bieschke has led her students in the creation of a Holocaust Memorial Museum at Prairie Grove Jr. High School. The museum will feature original projects by the students, in memory and memorial of the holocaust. The museum will be open to the public May 24-26 at the Prairie Grove Jr. High School Library. Bieschke first started creating the museum three years ago, although the Holocaust unit and student projects began six years ago. “The first two years I was so overwhelmed and impressed with their understanding and portrayals that I thought people need to see this,” Bieschke said.  After studying the Holocaust for several weeks, students put together projects in memorial and …

What an awesome example of a school district making a difference in the youth of our community. Continually teaching acceptance and tolerance from their Social and Emotional Learning programs to hosting Rachel's Challenge this past April and the continued efforts with the Holocaust Museum. These efforts will make a major difference in the world. I applaud the teachers, staff and parents for the …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: District Consolidation Will Hurt

Superintendent concerned about district's future

Dear Parents of Students in Prairie Grove 46, I make it a practice to separate politics and school leadership. However, every once in awhile something comes down the pike that cannot be ignored. This is one of those times. You may not be aware, but there is a bill that Governor Quinn is trying to pass to consolidate school districts in Illinois. This would have a devastating impact on our district. HB 1886 has been described as a true legislative bombshell. Local control of our district would be lost. Briefly, the bill would abolish every Illinois school district outside of Chicago on July 1, 2012, combining all other 867 districts into just 102–one for each county in the state. A committee is reviewing this bill already THIS Thursday! The…

English Language Learners Event Emphasizes Reading to Children

Prairie Grove hosts event to emphasize the importance of reading to children.

Friday morning, an English Language Learners (ELL) event at Prairie Grove emphasized the importance of reading to children. "We have an outstanding teacher at Prairie Grove for our ELL program. Her name is Renee DelMissier," said Prairie Grove Principal Vic Wight. The ELL program is for children who have more than one language spoken at home. "I have high expectations of the kids and like to help the parents too. I like to get the parents more involved," DelMissier said. DelMissier hosts events to invite the parents of the ELL program into the building. Friday morning she had the parents attend an ELL event featuring Dr. Jay Einhorn of the Learning Resource Alliance. Einhorn came to talk to the parents about the importance of reading …
