From the Wisconsin border to the south side of Chicago and into the western suburbs, local roads, interstates and highways were closed Thursday because of flooding. Click through the pins above to see which roads in your area — or on your route to and from work today — have been closed due to flooding or have high-standing water. Police are encouraging drivers to avoid roadways with standing water. If you come upon an area with high-standing water or that is closed, add that information to our map by visiting this link. The Alexander Leigh Center for Autism is seeking help from the community to paint its school at 620 N. Route 31 in Crystal Lake, according to a post on Crystal Lake-Cary Patch. ALCA is a non-profit, full day, year-round therapeutic day school approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. The day school serves children 3-15 years old with autism spectrum disorder, OHI, multiple disabilities, developmental delay and/or intellectual disability. National Weather Service in Chicago issued a severe thunderstorm warning for McHenry County until 12:15 p.m. and a flash flood warning until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for McHenry County until 12:15 p.m. The severe thunderstomr warning includes the following areas: At 11:15 a.m., a severe thunerstorm was located near Maple Park, moving northeast at 45 mph. Residents should be on the alert for quarter-sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts. The flash flood warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for: Thunderstorms producing torrential downpours are possible, with rainfall rates exceeding 1.5 inches per half hour. Kane County Emergency Management reports that the Route 47 and Plato Road intersection is completely flooded, the National Weather Service reports. McHenry County College will host a job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, in the Gym/Multipurpose Room of the college, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. Sponsored by MCC’s Career Services and the McHenry County Workforce Network, the job fair will feature more than 40 employers from various fields. The fair is open to MCC students and community residents. Applicants are encouraged to bring their resumes and dress professionally. Opportunities for both full-time and part-time positions ranging from entry level to professional abilities will be available. A flood warning is in affect for a portion of the Fox River in McHenry and Kane counties.
Rain, rain go away. The McHenry County area is expected to see plenty of April showers in the coming days. Rain—and some snow—is in the forecast for the area today through much of next week, according to the National Weather Service. Today, scattered showers are likely before 1 p.m. in Crystal Lake and are expected to start up again tonight. Cloudy skies and high of 47 degrees is in the forecast. Area voters report little to no wait at polling places during today's local election.
Many area voters reported a slow day at polling places during today's local election. April's local elections typically have low voter turnout. Here is a breakdown of voting tallies during the most recent local elections in McHenry County: Patch readers sounded off today on the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake-Cary Facebook pages regarding today's election. Many stated they dealt with little to no wait in their precincts. Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, poll workers in one local precinct said they believed today's turnout seemed much lower than past elections. Kona Ice of McHenry County owners Sherry and Scott Ravagnie received an ice cream vendor license from the city of Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lakers will see - and hear - a colorful new "ice cream" truck cruising the streets this summer. Kona Ice of McHenry County will be bringing its Hawaiian Shaved Ice truck to the city streets. The colorful truck, equipped with a Bose sound system, plays Calypso music and offers hundreds of shaved ice flavor options. The Crystal Lake City Council on Tuesday night approved Kona Ice of McHenry County's request for an ice cream vendor license. The company plans to operate one truck within the city limits. "We do a lot of fundraising events," owner Sherry Ravagnie, accompanied by her husband Scott, told council members. "We go to sports events, daycares. Night-time is our filler work." While lowering property taxes may ranks high on many local residents wish list, a low number of contested races in the upcoming local election could mean that such policy changes are unlikely, according to the Daily Herald. The Daily Herald reports 60 percent of the 2,100-plus local races in McHenry, Cook, Kane, DuPage and Lake counties are uncontested going into Tuesday's election.
