Cary-Grove Sports Roundup

The Week in Cary-Grove Athletics

A look back at what happened this week for the Trojans.

After a rainy beginning of the week that cancelled all Cary-Grove athletics on Monday and Tuesday, a look at what happened during Cary’s three days of competition this week… C-G’s baseball team started the week with a 5-1 win at Prairie Ridge as Matt Panek had four RBIs including a three-run homer. John Spoelstra threw a complete-game three-hitter to get the win. Cary added a 9-2 win on Thursday behind a three-run homer from Michael Vilardo. On Saturday, Vilardo put together a day for the ages in a doubleheader against McHenry. Vilardo homered three times and had 12 RBIs as Cary lost both games to the Warriors, losing game one 19-18 and game two 7-3 to fall to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the FVC Valley. Trojans Win Sixth Straight Conference Game

Cary jumps out to 35-8 lead and cruises to 57-32 win over Dundee-Crown to improve to 6-0 in the conference and 18-3 overall

With a game against state-ranked Hersey looming on Saturday afternoon at home, Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team had to be careful not to overlook Fox Valley Conference Valley Division rival Dundee-Crown Tuesday night as the second half of divisional play got underway. The Trojans certainly didn’t look past the Chargers, opening up a 27-point lead in the first half and cruising to a 57-32 win over D-C in Carpentersville. Cary (18-3, 6-0) began quickly, starting the game by scoring 18 of the first 22 points of the contest.  Cary continued the onslaught in the second quarter, scoring the 14 points while holding Dundee-Crown scoreless for the first 4:51 of the quarter to take a 35-8 lead. However, the Chargers would not quit late in the …

Cary-Grove's Poor Start Leads to Road Loss

Down 15-2 after one quarter on Tuesday night, the Trojans fall to Grayslake Central

At first glance, Cary-Grove junior center Ben Bradshaw might look to be a load for opposing teams. He's built like a football player at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds.  Only the folks around him know how hard it is for him to play on a nightly basis. That's because he went under the knife in July for a torn MCL. And it's taken some time for him to get back in playing shape. "He's still not 100 percent,'' said Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle. "It's ice and Advil after games." Cary fans in attendance in Grayslake Central on Tuesday night watched the visitors tie Central at 2-2 and that's a close as the Trojans would come all night. Central scored the next 15 points and went on to post a 57-33 win. "It was a disaster,'' Schuetzle said. "We had 10 …

MCC Notes: Men, Women Teams Work Through Difficult Stretch In Early Part of Season

Teams play Saturday home matchups with St. Clair (Mich.)

This season so far has been one to forget for McHenry County College's men's basketball team, starting off 2-10 on the year. Four of the team's 12 games have come by three points or less with the Scots losing three of those four games. Also, three of their players are averaging over 10 points a game but the team has been unable to get over the hump and get more victories. The team will play their first game in 11 days on Saturday against St. Clair (Mich.) and coach Jason Robinson said there are many things wrong with the team right now. "We're struggling on the defensive end of the floor," Robinson said. "We are really not understanding the concept of a five-man team defense and that has really hurt us. We will have four guys play …

Cary Girls' Basketball Wins Eighth Straight Game

Trojans improve to 11-1 with 64-38 win over Crystal Lake South, face tough test in Stevenson Thursday

The last two games for Cary-Grove's girls' basketball team have been easy victories on the surface with a 31-point win over Dundee-Crown and a 28-point win over Waukegan coming at Mundelein. Tuesday night, the Trojans headed back into Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play with a game against one of their biggest rivals in Crystal Lake South. Cary once again jumped out to a quick, early lead and was able to roll past the Gators 64-38. Claire Jakubicek led all scorers with 22 points including three straight plays to start the game where she was fouled while making a basketball and converting for the three-point play each time. Jakubicek finished the quarter with those nine points and Jennifer Perkins made a jumper at the buzzer to give…

Cary-Grove Girls' Basketball Notches Tenth Win of Season

Trojans improve to 10-1 with 65-37 win over Waukegan in Mundelein Tournament

Saturday's Mundelein Tournament opener for Cary-Grove's girls' basketball team looks a lot of like Thursday's game against Dundee-Crown. The Trojans jumped out to a big, early lead and allowed their bench to play most of the second half as Cary advanced to the quarterfinals with a 65-37 win over Waukegan. Cary (10-1) scored the first nine points of the contest and proceeded to open up a 23-9 lead after one quarter. Cary continued to extend the lead as Claire Jakubicek finished the first half with 17 points as C-G led 39-18 at the break. Jakubicek added four more points in the third quarter and finished the game with 21 points to lead all scorers. Jakubicek said the starters had some simple advice for the bench players during the fourth …

Cary-Grove Boys Basketball Bounces Back with Win

Coming off a tough loss earlier this week, the Trojans played tough on both ends, getting a 49-39 victory over Woodstock North Thunder.

The Cary-Grove's boys' basketball team worked on all cylinders Friday night, defeating the Thunder of Woodstock North, 49-39, to improve to a 3-4 record for the season. Both teams began the first quarter crashing the boards and playing tough defense, which led to a 7-4 low score after one period of play. However, the second quarter would be all Cary, outscoring the Thunder 18-5 to take a demanding lead into the half. Senior guard Nick Richter came alive in the second quarter, having no problem knocking down a couple of 3-pointers, scoring 10 points by halftime and would tack on another six points, giving him the game-high with 16. Richter said "We let our confidence build and kept on rolling." He said it's tough running the point guard …

Cary Girls' Basketball Cruises to FVC Valley Division Win

Jakubicek scores 18 while Nicholson adds 10 off bench to lead Trojans to 49-18 win against Dundee-Crown

Thursday night's Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opener turns into an opportunity for Cary-Grove's girls' basketball team to see how their bench play was. Claire Jakubicek scored 18 points as the Trojans defeated Dundee-Crown 49-18. Cary (9-1, 1-0) started quickly, jumping out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter and a 29-10 lead at the half while only allowing the Chargers to make three baskets in the half. Cary was able to cruise from there and coach Rod Saffert was able to rest Jakubicek along with her sister Olivia and point guard Meg Straumann for the entire fourth quarter. Saffert said that it was good to see what the bench could do. "The more playing time I can get them the better," Saffert said. "I was telling the starters it's …

MCC Basketball: Women Get Second Win, Men Struggle in Five-Game Stretch

Mens' team gets through tough stretch with 2-3 record while women gets second win of season

Things have not been going well for McHenry County College's womens' basketball team over the past two seasons. Last season, the team struggled to a 1-26 record. It appears however things may be turning around as the Scots won their second game of the 2010-11 season Tuesday night, defeating Wright College 50-43 in Chicago. Coach Pam Mason said that things are going in a positive direction. "Things are definitely getter better, people are coming into their roles," Mason said. "Megan (Martinez) is a great defender and had five steals against Wright and a lot of her players are coming from driving to the basket, getting fouled and getting to the free throw line. She had 13 of her 20 points come from the free-throw line. Hopefully we got …
