A traffic stop at the corner of Routes 31 and 14 in Crystal Lake led to the arrest of a California man and seizure of $290,000 worth of narcotics, McHenry County Sheriff police said. Michael P. Karavastev, 38, 1619 Ottawa Ct., Apt. 3, Sunnyvale, Calif., was arrested Monday, Dec. 3, and charged with: A McHenry County Sheriff deputy initiated a traffic stop on Karavastev, who was driving a 2011 Mercedes Sprinter van near the intersection of Routes 14 and 31 on the east side of Crystal Lake. A McHenry County K-9 Deputy was called to the scene, and the service dog indicated the presence of narcotics inside the Mercedes, according to the sheriff's office. An 83-year-old Woostock woman turned herself into McHenry County Sheriff police on Thursday afternoon after she said she unknowingly hit and killed 6-year-old Brayan Silva near Union on Sept. 8. Varamae C. Phillip was charged with failure to report a fatal traffic accident and leaving the scene of a crime, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office said. Phillip posted 10 percent of a $50,000 bond and was released. Phillip told sheriff investigators she thought a branch had fallen on her car last Saturday night as she drove northbound on Franklinville Road through the dark and rain, according to the Daily Herald. A teenage girl standing at her bus stop this past week in Wonder Lake noticed a stranger driving by in a black car three days in a row. Something about the man seemed suspicious to the girl, and she relayed her observations to a school official at McHenry West High School, according to a press release issued by McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren. After receiving information Thursday afternoon, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office initiated a proactive patrol in the area of Wonder Lake Road and Ash Street in unincorporated Wonder Lake, where the sightings had occured. Fugitive has six warrants out for his arrest.
A fugitive from McHenry County Sheriff's Office's Top Ten Most Wanted List was apprehended at his residence in Chicago Wednesday. Octavio Nunez, 37, 4547 S. Mozart Ave. in Chicago was charged with a number of counts, including two warrants in McHenry County for violation of the sex offender registry and one warrant for resisting arrest. According to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit, United States Marshal’s Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and Immigrations Custom Enforcement received information that Nunez was possibly living in Chicago. The McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a loud party in the early morning hours, Thursday, March 29, and ended up issuing 34 notice to appear in court (NTA) citations for unlawful consumption of an alcoholic beverage by a minor. In a news release, Sheriff Keith Nygren announced that at 1:13 a.m., March 29, members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to 9118 Pine Needle Pass, Bull Valley, in response to a report of a loud party. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and made contact with several individuals outside the residence. Deputies then made contact with nearly 60 individuals within the residence.
