Burton L. Showers, aka “Sarge”, was presented with a Quilt of Valor by seven of his former students at PHS, along with the Gazebo Quilters of Huntley who created the masterpiece.
A former Palatine High School History teacher and D211 administrator received an honorable surprise honor on Monday, May 6, from several of his former students from the PHS Class of 1957, and the Gazebo Quilters of Huntley. Burton L. Showers, 87, of Palatine, fondly known as “Sarge”, was presented with a 'Quilt of Valor' at Emmett’s Ale House, 110 N. Brockway St., during what he thought was a lunch gathering with seven students he taught U.S. History to at Palatine High School. “It’s a great thing, I was very surprised – this is something special,” Showers said. Lake in the Hills Village Board members were not pleased when the McHenry County Board's Transportation Committee added a last-minute agenda item for its meeting last Wendesday. The item called for bids for a continuous flow intersection at Algonquin and Randall roads, the First Electric Newspaper reports. The last-minute agenda item called for Phase II design proposals to rebuild the clogged Randall-Algonquin roads intersection to improve traffic flow, FEN reports. LITH leaders oppose the continuous flow intersection proposal as they fear it could hurt local businesses.

A rollover accident at the busy intersection slowed traffic Monday evening.
Three people were sent to the hospital in stable condition following a crash at Algonquin and Randall roads about 5 p.m. Monday, according to the Daily Herald. The accident happened when a Mercedes-Benz collided with a Saturn sports utility vehicle at the busy intersection, causing the SUV to roll over, according to witnesses from the scene. AMC Lake in the Hills 12, 311 N. Randall Road, is undergoing several renovations, which will include the addition of a small lobby bar.
A bar area, new reclining seats and more aisle space for movie-goers are a few of the major upgrades underway at the Lake in the Hills movie theater. The Lake in the Hills Village Board on Thursday approved a liquor license for the AMC Theatre at 311 N. Randall Road in Lake in the Hills, which will allow the theater to move forward with plans to add a small lobby bar, according to the LITH weekly resident newsletter. The addition of the bar will allow those over the age of 21 years old to purchase alcoholic beverages before and after the movie and also bring those drinks into the movie theaters, according to village documents. The bar concept, MacGuffins, is used by other AMC theaters throughout the country, according to AMC’s website. …

Help Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Patch reach 1,300 followers Lake in the Hills Police responded to a one-vehicle accident at the Woods Creek Apartments, near Village Creek Drive and Acorn Lane, Friday afternoon. It appeared the vehicle ran into a power box in the yard by the apartments. Emergency personnel and police were on the scene around 3:30 p.m. The vehicle was towed from the location. Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Patch will update with more information once it becomes available.

Crystal Lake Police have issued an arrest warrant for Elias Ramos-Ortiz, 17, of Crystal Lake, for one felony count of possession of heroin relating to the death of 17-year-old Stephanie Chiakas, the Northwest Herald reports. Chiakas, of Lake in the Hills, was found dead on March 10 in Ramos-Ortiz's home at 604 Grand Canyon Circle in Crystal Lake. Ramos-Ortiz's was found in possession of heroin during the course of the investigation, the Northwest Herald reports. An arrest warrant also has been issued for Brett Jurgens, 25, of Crystal Lake, for a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said. Jurgens is accused of supplying Ramos-Ortiz and Chiakas with alcohol on the day of her death, police said. Related …

A 47-year-old Lake in the Hills man faces an aggravated stalking charge for accusations he stalked or harassed a former girlfriend, according to the Daily Herald. A Cook County Judge ordered a $200,000 bond for Bryant Smith, who lives in the 0 to 100 lock of Woodland Road in Lake in the Hills, who had been in custody since December for violating an order of protection, according to the article.
