Crystal Lake's New Police Chief Sworn into Office

James R. Black on Tuesday night, Jan. 15, was sworn in as the city's top cop by Mayor Aaron Shepley.

  Crystal Lake's new police chief is officially on the job. Chief James R. Black was sworn into office on Tuesday night by Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley during the regularly scheduled city council meeting. Black was joined by his wife and family for the ceremony as well as several members of the Crystal Lake Police Department and Fire Rescue Department. Black was selected from among 77 submissions to replace retiring Police Chief David Linder after an extensive national recruitment search. He comes to Crystal Lake from west suburban Downers Gorve, where he served as acting deputy police chief. The new chief, who began his position on Jan. 7, has a strong law enforcement management background and a dedication to professional staff …

Crystal Lake Names New Police Chief; Linder to Retire

The city has announced James R. Black, Deputy Police Chief in Downers Grove, will fill acting CL Police Chief David Linder's position upon his retirement this month.

After an extensive national recruitment search, the city of Crystal Lake has selected the acting deputy police chief from west suburban Downers Grove as its new police chief. James R. Black will assume the duties of the city's top cop on Jan. 7, 2013, Crystal Lake City Manager Gary Mayerhofer said in a press release issued Friday. Acting Crystal Lake Police Chief David Linder in June announced plans to retire after 32 years on the force. Linder began his career with the Crystal Lake Police Department in 1980 as a police officer and eventual worked his way through the ranks until his appointment as chief on Sept. 6, 2005, Mayerhofer said. “Chief Linder has been a dedicated professional and will be missed,” Mayerhofer said. “I believe that …
