The Illinois Tollway is advising motorists to take extra caution while out and about today.
The Illinois Tollway is advising drivers to travel with caution and only if necessary today in response to continuing rain and potential for roadway flooding across the 286-mile system of roads serving 12 counties in Northern Illinois. The Illinois Tollway’s Traffic Operations Center is open and fully staffed with operators and roadway supervisors coordinating with state and local officials to manage this weather event. Construction contracts approved last week include a major ramp construction projects for the new Tri-State Tollway (I-294)/I-57 Interchange, according to a press release from the Illinois Tollway.
The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors last week approved 13 new construction contracts totaling $70.9 million. "Dollars spent on infrastructure translate into increased opportunities for businesses and workers here in Illinois," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur in a press release. The Illinois Tollway Finance Administration Operations Committee on Wednesday recommended approval of an intergovernmental agreement authorizing the village of Hoffman Estates to begin engineering plans for improvements to the Barrington Road Interchange as part of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) Rebuilding and Widening Project. Under the agreement, the Tollway will oversee construction of a new Barrington Road Bridge carrying traffic over I-90 in partnership with Hoffman Estates, which will take the lead on final engineering and design plans. The Illinois Tollway is mobilizing all available resources to keep roadways clear as rain this afternoon is expected to turn into snow at the start of this evening’s rush hour and continue into the night. “Drivers should build in some extra travel time tonight as rain turning to snow is expected to slow down this evening’s commute,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “As always, we remind our customers to use caution and leave room for snow plows to do their job.” Illinois Tollway staff has been monitoring conditions throughout the day and is prepared to mobilize snowplows and other equipment as needed when the weather begins to change. The Elgin-O’Hare Expressway has always perplexed people since the road doesn’t go anywhere near O’Hare International Airport. But that will change with the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project. The Illinois Tollway and the Illinois Department of Transportation received word Wednesday that a plan to expand the expressway has been approved by the federal agencies, according to a release. Those federal agencies issued a Record of Decision, the final step in the federal review of the project’s environmental impact, for the $3.4 billion project. The Illinois Tollway today announced plans to pursue its worst toll violators by filing lawsuits against them in court. “We are sending a clear and strong message to these chronic violators who use the Tollway regularly without paying: ‘Your time is up,’” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “Anything less would be unfair to the 98 percent of Tollway customers who pay their tolls on time.” The Tollway began filing administrative judgements in circuit court today, Friday, Sept. 7. The Metropolitan Planning Council is floating an idea of charging drivers on the Illinois Tollway to avoid traffic, the Sun-Times reports. The Tollway awarded contracts this week for a construction project to widen and rebuilt Interstate 90 from O’Hare International Airport to Rockford. During the project, the tollway could use a “congestion pricing,” the Sun-Times Reports. Commuters will be dealing with lots of construction on the roadways this summer, including the full-interchange project at I-90 and Route 47 in Huntley.

The good news is the Illinois Tollway is restricting construction activity this Memorial Day weekend. The bad news the roads will be jam packed with about 7 million motorists. The Tollway expects approximately 7 million vehicles will travel the Tollway system this Memorial Day holiday beginning today through Tuesday and is reminding customers to drive safely when traveling in construction work zones throughout the Illinois Tollway system. The Tollway expects the heaviest travel on Friday when nearly 1.6 million vehicles are projected to be on the road. On an average day, about 1.4 million vehicles use the Tollway. The Illinois Tollway is preparing to mobilize its full fleet of 183 snowplows in response to the snowfall expected to begin early this evening and continue into Friday morning. The Tollway's Snow Operations Center will be open this afternoon to manage the agency's systemwide response.
