Teammates react to Jakubicek breaking school scoring record
There have been many great players who have passed through the Cary-Grove girls' basketball program throughout the years like Amy Kaplan, Ellen Jaeschke, Eve Barry and many more. After Saturday night, one name stands above the others in terms of scoring prowess after Claire Jakubicek scored 1,233rd point to pass Barry on the all-time scoring list. Jakubicek now has 1,244 points after her 30-point effort in the Trojans' win over Johnsburg. Jakubicek said that the record is something she gives a lot of credit to others as well. "I think it is a real honor," Jakubicek said. "I couldn't have done it without my team so it's all them too." Meg Straumann, who has played with Jakubicek all four years on the varsity team, said that she has seen …

Trojans score three times in under three minutes in third period for 5-4 win over Carmel
It seems like all hope had been lost with Cary-Grove's hockey team trailing by two with just over four minutes to play Thursday night against Carmel at Crystal Ice House. That's when the Trojans responded with three goals in a two and a half minute stretch for a 5-4 come from behind win over the Corsairs. Things got off on the right foot for Cary even though they committed multiple penalties in the first period and a half of the game as Mike Vilardo scored shorthanded to give Cary a 1-0 lead with 9:56 left in the opening period. Vilardo would duplicate his task a little over a minute later as he scored once again on a breakaway short-handed to propel Cary to a 2-0 lead after one period of play. However, Carmel would respond in the middle …

Trojans score just 11 points in first half of 48-38 loss to Hononegah
Cary-Grove's boys' basketball team came into the final day of the Hoops for Healing Tournament on Saturday, feeling confident after winning two straight games. That confidence would soon fade in the stiffening pressure defense from Hononegah as the Trojans fell 48-38 at Woodstock High School. Cary (2-2) managed just 11 points in the first half, seven of which coming from Jon Guay and fell behind 23-11 at the break. Guay then began to turn it on from beyond the three-point line, hitting five three-pointers in the second half as Cary began to mount a comeback. With Cary trailing 35-21 in the waning seconds of the third quarter, Nick Richter made his only basket of the game, a leaning three-pointer to pull the Trojans back within 11. Guay …

Richter scores 15 of game-high 23 points in first half as Trojans win Hoops for Healing game 51-44 against Larkin
There are games where you need your best player to step forward even more than normal. One of those times came Friday night for Cary-Grove's boys' basketball team and senior point guard Nick Richter. Richter scored 15 of Cary's 23 first-half points and finished the game with 23 points as the Trojans built up an 18-point lead and hung on for a 51-44 win over Larkin at the Hoops for Healing Tournament at Woodstock North. Cary (2-1) jumped out again early, taking a 23-19 lead into halftime on the shoulders of Richter's big first half. Richter said that the fact the game was being played at a quick level got him numerous scoring chances. "That was just getting fast break easy points," Richter said. "We were pushing the ball down the floor and …

Richter hits three-pointer with two minutes left to give Cary the lead and a 39-34 win over Round Lake at Hoops for Healing Tournament
When a team gets their first win of the season, the confidence begins to flow. For Cary-Grove's boys' basketball team, that confidence can now start as Nick Richter hit a three-pointer with two minutes remaining to give Cary the lead and Eric Graham hit two free throws with under a minute to go for insurance as the Trojans defeated Round Lake 39-34 Wednesday night at the Hoops for Healing Tournament in Woodstock. Cary (1-1) began the game like they had on Monday night; scoring quickly and held Round Lake scoreless the first 5:15 of the game to open up a 12-0 lead. Unfortunately, that lead would soon slow away as Round Lake would score the next 11 points and 15 of the next 17 as the two teams went to the half tied at 15 apiece. The two …
