Task force, sheriff's deputies and Harvard Police made several arrests in Harvard on Friday evening.
The McHenry County Gang Task Force was activated Friday by the Harvard Police Department in order to suppress a recent spike in gang activity in Harvard. During the suppression detail, task force members and Harvard Police made about 18 contacts with gang members, nine arrests, three traffic arrests and recovered approximately 15 grams of cannabis, a scale, paraphernalia, and a loaded handgun, according to a release issued by McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren. A search of the school turned up nothing suspicious and an investigation is ongoing.
A McHenry County elementary school was among many schools throughout the country that police responded to Monday for potentially suspicious incidents on the first day back to school following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn. Harvard Police responded to Crosby Elementary School at 7:45 a.m. after a .22-caliber shell casing was found on the cafeteria floor, according to the Northwest Herald. Students "were kept in their classrooms doing school work for about three hours" as a search was conducted at the school, according to the Chicago Tribune. McHenry County College and the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners Walk 2012 was held in July. The walk included a self-guided tour of seven private gardens, the Harvard Community Garden and the MCC demonstration garden. These photographs were submitted by Patch reader, Denise S. An 87-year-old McHenry woman was believed to have been walking east on the railroad tracks in unincorporated Harvard when the accident occurred.
An elderly McHenry woman died Sunday night after being struck by a Metra train in unincorporated Harvard. Gloria C. Jacobs, 87, of McHenry, had been walking east along the tracks immediately prior to the accident at 8:27 p.m. Sunday, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Department press release. Emergency personnel responding to the scene found Jacobs about a half-mile west of Schultz Road near Brink Street in unincorporated Harvard. A preliminary investigation found Jacobs had been driving on roadways in the area Sunday night. Jacobs, who was lost and unfamiliar with the roadways, turned onto the railroad tracks at the Brink Street crossing for unknown reasons, according to the release.
