KaleidoScoops Gingerbread Contest: A Delightful Holiday Tradition

Downtown Crystal Lake ice cream shop opens display case to the public for annual gingerbread creation contest.

  Colorful gingerbread houses covered in snow made of frosting and gum drops  brighten the store window of KaleidoScoops Ice Cream shop in downtown Crystal Lake. Some of the gingerbread creations have been carefully built by masters of the art of baking and decorating such as one whimsical tiny carousel. The carousel's gingerbread horses are battery-powered to rotate just like the life-sized version. Other candy-topped houses were created by smaller hands, those with a carefree touch for the children's gingerbread division. All the displays are part of the 10th annual Gingerbread Contest hosted by KaleidoScoops, 53 N. Downtown Crystal Lake: Gingerbread Contest Helps Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign

Downtown Crystal Lake creates festively artistic displays to raise money for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.

  The Downtown Crystal Lake businesses are helping raise a little more "dough" for the 2012 Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Participating downtown merchants have created gingerbread displays as part of a friendly competition to raise money for the Salvation Army of McHenry County, headquartered at 290 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake. The concept is simple: If customers like a store's gingerbread display, they can "vote" for their favorite - or favorites - by dropping a donation into the smaller red kettles hanging either next to the display, or by the store cash register.
