The Week in Cary-Grove Athletics

A look at the past seven days for the Trojans.

The Cary-Grove athletic season drew one week closer to its conclusion this week, here’s a look at what happened the last seven days. Cary’s softball team finished their regular season on Monday with a 5-0 win over Marengo. Jamie Deering had two RBIs while Lisa Semro hit a three-run homer in the win. The Trojans began regional play on Tuesday at the Class 4A McHenry Regional, defeating the host Warriors 6-0 to advance to the championship game. Lindsay Efflandt struck out seven for her second straight shut out as Cary won their 25th straight game on the season. On Friday, Cary won their second straight regional title with a 2-1 win over Grant. Eleni Polites and Alexis Haley both scored on a passed ball in the first inning for all the runs C-…

A look back at what happened this week for the Trojans.

After a rainy beginning of the week that cancelled all Cary-Grove athletics on Monday and Tuesday, a look at what happened during Cary’s three days of competition this week… C-G’s baseball team started the week with a 5-1 win at Prairie Ridge as Matt Panek had four RBIs including a three-run homer. John Spoelstra threw a complete-game three-hitter to get the win. Cary added a 9-2 win on Thursday behind a three-run homer from Michael Vilardo. On Saturday, Vilardo put together a day for the ages in a doubleheader against McHenry. Vilardo homered three times and had 12 RBIs as Cary lost both games to the Warriors, losing game one 19-18 and game two 7-3 to fall to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the FVC Valley. Trojans' Win Softball Opener, Despite no Hits

Cary escapes 2-1 over Antioch after four Sequoits errors in sixth

The way the pitching duel between Cary-Grove’s Lindsay Efflandt and Antioch’s Olivia Duehr was going, it appeared the two teams would play until sunset before one team would score a run. Finally in the sixth inning, the Trojans were able to scratch out two runs on four Sequoits errors as Cary won their season-opener 2-1 without the benefit of a single hit in the game. The inning started when Sara Markelonis reached on an error. Eleni Polites then bunted and Duehr threw the ball over first baseman Kat Dinklenburg’s head. Dinklenburg attempted to throw Markelonis out at third but committed the third error of the inning, allowing Markelonis to score and send Polites to third. With Alexis Haley up next, Duehr’s first pitch went in the dirt and…
