The Congregational Church of Algonquin will host its 3rd Annual Heavenly Chocolate Fest on March 23.
If you are looking for a sweet pick-me-up—or a special treat for this Easter — the 3rd Annual Heavenly Chocolate Fest this weekend may have just the thing. The festival that celebrates all things chocolate and sweet will be held at the Congregational Church of Algonquin, 109 Washington St. in Algonquin, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday. Area vendors and members of the church will be selling goodies and there will also be live cooking demonstration that will feature chocolate and it's many uses. Admission is free.

Feb. 13 marks Ash Wednesday, which is the start of the Lenten season for many Christian religions including Catholic, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican and Eastern Orthodox churches. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday takes place 40 days before Easter. Sundays that fall during that timeframe are not included in the 40-day count. On Ash Wednesday, many Christians will go to church to receive a cross of ashes on their forehead. The ashes are used as a sign of repentance to God. During lent, many Christians fast and repent to reflect upon Jesus Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. It’s customary for Catholics to not eat meat on Fridays during lent.
