Downtown Crystal Lake Hosts 'Breakfast with Santa'

Annual holiday gathering returns to the Old Towne Hall in historic downtown Crystal Lake on Saturday, Dec. 8.

  Held in the comfort of the Old Towne Hall in downtown Crystal Lake, "Breakfast with Santa" has become a fun tradition for many families.  Everyone enjoys a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice and more. Music, singing and a festive holiday atmosphere fills the room.  Each boy and girl receives a special cuddly gift, graciously donated by Dalzell Jewelers. There will be lots of other prizes too. But the big reason for coming is to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus! There is always plenty of time for each child to sit on Santa's lap, and recite his/her Christmas list. Crystal Lake's 'Festival of Lights Parade' Set for Friday Night

Friday evening parade will feature about 50 lighted floats and parade entries in historic downtown Crystal Lake. Oh, ho, ho....Santa will be there, too!

The annual Festival of Lights Parade kicks off the holiday season on Friday - and welcomes good old Santa Clause himself - to Crystal Lake. Grab the kids, grandma and grandpa, too, and make your way to historic downtown Crystal Lake to watch a colorful, illuminated holiday parade filled with more than 50 decorated floats. The parade starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23. Entries this year include floats brightly decorated with thousands of sparkling holiday lights, the Lundahl Middle School band, the Crystal Lake Strikers drum corps, the District 47 school bus drivers, boy and girl scout troops, a zamboni from the local ice rink, and the honorary guest - Santa Clause in his horse-drawn sleigh, said Diana Kenney, executive director of Downtown …

Johnny Appleseed Festival Offers Fall Fun Today in Crystal Lake

It's apple time! Johnny Appleseed Festival scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in downtown Crystal Lake.

  Scarecrows, apples and pies, oh my! Only one day remaining until the 20th Annual Johnny Appleseed Festival in Downtown Crystal Lake. This year's event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. Crystal Lake's largest one-day event invites families and the community to celebrate Fall.   Activities for the day include live music, entertainment, pony rides, petting zoo, pumpkin train, pumpkin bowling, clowns, face painting, story telling, temporary tattoos, wagon rides, Farmers Market, and more. Great Ball Race Returns to Johnny Appleseed Festival

Fundraiser is fun for the spectators, and grand prize winner walks away with a $1,000.

  The Great Ball Race returns this year to the Johnny Appleseed Festival on Saturday, Sept. 29, in downtown Crystal Lake. Colored balls will be released at the top of the Brink Street hill at 3 p.m. All the balls are numbered, and guests can purchase raffle tickets with numbers that coordinate with the balls. The first ball down the hill awards the holder of the winning number a grand prize of $1,000, according to the Downtown Crystal Lake website. Guaranteed to be something for everyone! The downtown businesses will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 19, for this annual event. Oh Yes, It's Ladies Night!

Downtown Crystal Lake brings Ladies Night Out to area businesses.

Downtown Crystal Lake/Main Street has organized a night out for area ladies, featuring a host of businesses and specials for everyone who attends. The event, named Ladies Night Out, will start at 5 p.m. tonight (Thursday, April 12) at the Raue Center, 26 N. Williams St. and continue throughout the downtown area. A lot of businesses are participating this year, each one offering special discounts, prizes or coupons for area shoppers. The first 500 customers will receive a map of the event, a list of participating businesses and a bag filled with coupons, deals and other surprises. Residents Prepare for Walkup Construction

The $11 million project includes improving the Walkup-Route 176 intersection.

Some say it can’t come soon enough. Widening the intersection of Walkup Road and Route 176 starts in early March. The $11 million project — once it’s completed — is intended to ease the flow of traffic through a major bottleneck north of Crystal Lake’s Downtown District  Crews recently had been at work identifying buried utilities such as water mains and power lines near the intersection, said John Ambrose, with the Crystal Lake-based engineering firm Baxter and Woodmen Inc. “Gosh, it’s needed,” said Diana Kenney, executive director of the nonprofit Downtown Crystal Lake. “But it’s going to be a painful process,” she added. “I suggest avoiding the intersection during construction. Diana Kenney — Preserving, Celebrating Crystal Lake's Past

A member of the CL Historical Preservation Commission, CL Historical Society and executive director of Downtown Crystal Lake Main Street, Kenney's life's work is devoted to the city's past...and future.

Diana Kenney has a history of getting involved with preservation projects and any events highlighting Crystal Lake’s heritage. As a founding member and current president of the Crystal Lake Historical Society, Kenney, 54, strives to share the city’s history, helping coordinate special educational events like the upcoming Candle Light Presentation at the Colonel Palmer House scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3. "I'm drawn to the historic buildings and the stories that go with them," Kenney said. "I like learning about the people who built the buidlings and their history." Crystal Lake Parade Brings Santa to Town

The Festival of Lights draws a huge crowd.

The sun went down, the crowd filled the sidewalks around downtown Crystal Lake and the sounds of Christmas music, drums and cheering roared through the streets. The 2011 Festival of Lights parade had begun. This year's parade, presented by Downtown Crystal Lake, featured an array of floats, music and entertainment Saturday evening. With the temperatures still in the 50s, a huge crowd showed up to welcome Santa and his wife to town. This year's trophy winners were: Congratulations to Downtown Crystal Lake Executive Director Diana Kenney on a great event and don't forget to visit Santa now that he's in town. Santa's hours:
