Raue Center for the Arts is the recipient of two grants.
Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake has been awarded two highly regarded grants. The first grant is was from the Foglia Family Foundation to help fund "Mission Imagination," Raue Center’s education outreach program for the area school children, according to Melissa Thomfohrda, director of marketing for the Raue. The organization was also awarded a grant from The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and the MacArthur Fund for Arts & Culture at The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation in support of Raue Center’s in-house theatre company, Williams Street Repertory, Thomfohrda said. Raue Center for the Arts is located at 26 N. Williams Street in downtown Crystal Lake.

Bunny lunch is scheduled for Saturday, March 30, in downtown Crystal Lake.
Downtown Crystal Lake has announced tickets are on sale now for the annual "Lunch with the Bunny." The Easter Bunny is taking time out of his busy holiday schedule to mix and mingle with area children at this popular hometown event that sells out year after year, according to the Downtown Crystal Lake webage. This year's festivities will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, at the Old Towne Hall, 54 Brink St., in historic downtown Crystal Lake. Business owners have applied for a $10,000 matching grant, which Crystal Lake city officials are expected to vote upon tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013.
Riverside Chocolate Factory, based in McHenry, is looking to set up shop in downtown Crystal Lake. The Crystal Lake City Council on Tuesday will consider an application from Riverside for a $10,000 matching grant fund. If approved, the New Retailer Job Creation and Investment Matching Grant would be used by Riverside Chocolates for furniture, fixtures and equipment needed to open the store at 2 N. Williams Street, adjacent to the Flagg Antique Mall near the corner of Crystal Lake Avenue. According to Riverside's grant application, the store would employ one full-time and three part-time employees. Owners would improve the 1,221-square-foot retail space, and the store would feature the same hand-dipped chocolates and freshly made candies …

Food drive aims to restock shelves at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry.
It seems just like yesterday that Patch was covering the annual Community Harvest food drive on Thanksgiving Day. More than 1,000 volunteers showed up early Thanksgiving morning to sort and pack 85,985 pounds worth of food donations for the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, 257 King St. It may be hard to believe, but some of those supplies have already been depleted. The most frequently selected items by pantry patrons - like chili and soda crackers - are running in low supply. For that reason, the Downtown Crystal Lake merchants held their second annual "Have a Heart Food Drive," which concluded on Saturday. The Crystal Lake City Council rejected a proposal Tuesday to make Grant Street a two-way street between Woodstock and Brink streets, according to the Northwest Herald. The downtown street is currently a one-way thoroughfare. The hope was that as a two-way street there could be an increase in traffic in front of businesses along Grant, more parking could be added and that it would be"easier to create an on-street bike route," according to the Northwest Herald.

Paul Arthur Marsh, 85, of Crystal Lake, died peacefully at home on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, after battling cancer. He was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Francis and Pauline Marsh. Upon graduating from Burlington High School in 1947, he served a tour of duty in occupied Japan as a member of the U.S. Army. He received his B.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of Colorado in 1951, and served another three years in the Army as a pharmacist in Germany. He married Donna Lau in 1953, and devoted his life to her, their children and the service of others. He was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis for over 50 years and was an active proponent of social justice. He moved to Crystal Lake in 1969 as proprietor of Paul …

Downtown Crystal Lake ice cream shop opens display case to the public for annual gingerbread creation contest.
Colorful gingerbread houses covered in snow made of frosting and gum drops brighten the store window of KaleidoScoops Ice Cream shop in downtown Crystal Lake. Some of the gingerbread creations have been carefully built by masters of the art of baking and decorating such as one whimsical tiny carousel. The carousel's gingerbread horses are battery-powered to rotate just like the life-sized version. Other candy-topped houses were created by smaller hands, those with a carefree touch for the children's gingerbread division. All the displays are part of the 10th annual Gingerbread Contest hosted by KaleidoScoops, 53 N. Downtown Crystal Lake creates festively artistic displays to raise money for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.
The Downtown Crystal Lake businesses are helping raise a little more "dough" for the 2012 Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Participating downtown merchants have created gingerbread displays as part of a friendly competition to raise money for the Salvation Army of McHenry County, headquartered at 290 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake. The concept is simple: If customers like a store's gingerbread display, they can "vote" for their favorite - or favorites - by dropping a donation into the smaller red kettles hanging either next to the display, or by the store cash register. The Kiwanis Club expected a good crowd for Sunday's 5K - having had 500 people pre-register. But, by race day, another 201 participants had joined the fun.
Balmy weather and the promise of a jolly good time lured 701 participants from their beds early Sunday morning to the "Santa Run, Reindeer Dash for Kids." This first-time-ever event was hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Crystal Lake as a way to raise money for McHenry County organizations serving children. Runners, walkers, participants pushing strollers and some tagging along dogs gathered at the Raue Center for the Arts where the race kicked off at 9 a.m. The giant crowd of Santa Clauses weaved its way through the streets of downtown Crystal Lake. Temperatures were so warm some Santas converted their red pants into cutoff shorts, others opted to skip wearing the Santa suit, and many beards were seen flying along the course. By all …
