Wolves Win First State Title

Prairie Ridge beats Peoria Richwoods 35-14 in the 6A state finals as junior running back Jordan Getzelman scores two touchdowns.

CHAMPAIGN—After two years of losing in the state semifinals, the Prairie Ridge football team finally got to the 6A state finals and made school history Saturday. The Wolves (13-1) won their first state championship with a 35-14 victory over Peoria Richwoods (10-4). Players and fans were building up anticipation after senior cornerback John Borst intercepted the ball with less than a minute remaining. As time expired, everyone jumped and cheered amid many joyful tears. “I’m proud of how our guys handled the entire season,” Prairie Ridge coach Chris Schremp said. “That game you saw tonight is what we’ve been going through the last few weeks — good, hard-nosed football. Our defense came out and played a great game, especially with tackling.” …

STATE CHAMPIONS!

Prairie Ridge tops Peoria-Richwoods to take the 6A title.

For the first time in school history, the Prairie Ridge Wolves are state champions. The Wolves beat Peoria-Richwoods 35-14 in another display of power and balance. With both teams struggling to score through the first two quarters the game started to open up for the Wolves in the second half. Tied 7-7 with 7:12 left in the third quarter, the Wolves found a weakness on the Knights line. Prairie Ridge started to run left when Jordan Getzelman ran in from the 10-yard line to put the Wolves up 14-7. Less than 90 seconds later, Wolves defensive end Erik Odden scooped up a fumble by Richwoods quarterback Jeremye Johnson and ran it into the end zone. The Knights got back into it after Clayton Glasper hauled in 59-yard reception at the Prairie …

Prairie Ridge holds pep rally for team headed for the championship game.

Prairie Ridge heads to Champaign to play for the state championship, but first the school wanted to give the players a proper send-off. The students and faculty packed the gymnasium Tuesday afternoon for a pep rally in honor of the Wolves team that has only dropped one game all season, an overtime loss to Cary-Grove. Prairie Ridge (12-1) will meet Peoria Richwoods (10-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Class 6A title game.

Wolves Get Another Shot to Make Championship Game

Prairie Ridge has come up short two straight years.

Prairie Ridge @ Batavia 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 Most teams would be more than happy to just be in this position. The Wolves sit at 11-1 and one win away from playing for the 6A state title. But Prairie Ridge has been here before. In fact they've been here a lot. The Wolves have lost in the semifinals the last two years, losing to eventual champions, Cary-Grove in 2009 and Rockford Boylan in 2010, the last two years. And now they travel to Batavia to take on on the undefeated Bulldogs who are outscoring their playoff opponents by a combined 108-45. But don't count the Wolves out. Prairie Ridge has outscored their playoff opponents by a combined 139-14 and their only loss came in a overtime defeat to a tough Cary-Grove team. Getting to know…

GALLERY: Prairie Ridge's Playoff Run Continues

Prairie Ridge beats Nazareth 35-7 to move on to the 6A Semifinals.

Prairie Ridge beats Nazareth 35-7 to become one of four teams remaining in the 6A playoffs.

Gutsy Gators Can't Overcome Slow Start

Crystal Lake South played Rockford Boylan even in the second half, but an explosive first half by the Titans was the difference in the game.

Crystal Lake South went three and out with the opening kickoff. On the Titan’s first play they hit a 50-yard pass to DeMarcus Vines that put the ball on the 4-yard line. Two plays later, Rockford Boylan put it in the end zone and never looked back in their way to a 30-13 victory. Pinned deep in their own territory, the Gators were victimized by the first of three interceptions that gave the Titans the ball on the 3-yard line from where they scored their second touchdown in less than a minute. With 5:18 left in the first quarter Rockford kicked a 25-yard field goal and led the stunned Gators, 17-0. "We had to keep them from getting big plays and stop them from running the ball and we didn’t," said South coach Chuck Ahsmann. "They’re a very …

Wolves Move On, South Season Ends

Our short recaps of Saturday's action.

Prairie Ridge 35, Nazareth 7 The recipe was pretty much more of the same for Prairie Ridge: play great defense and give your offensive weapons a chance. The Wolves got out to a three touchdown lead in the first quarter against Nazareth Academy (10-2) and the defense never let up to give Prairie Ridge 35-7 Saturday. Prairie Ridge (11-1) moves on to the Semifinals where they'll have to travel to take on undefeated Batavia (12-0). While Batavia has allowed 45 points during their playoff run, they've scored 108 points. The Wolves have outscored their three opponents 139-14. Rockford Boylan 30, Crystal Lake South 13 The Gators fell behind in the first half and weren't able to overcome the deficit as South fell 30-13 to Boylan. South (10-2) …

Wolves Take on Nazareth, South Looks to Advance Past Boylan

Two Crystal Lake teams are still alive in the IHSA football playoffs.

Rockford Boylan @ Crystal Lake South - 1 p.m. Saturday The Gators (10-1) take an undefeated Boylan (11-0) team that is attempting to win their second straight state title. The tough South defense is allowing just less than 10 points a game, but they'll have their hands full when they match against Boylan's offense. Titans quarterback Lamont Toney has thrown 22 touchdowns this year while running back Tyreis Thomas has rushed for more than 1,200 this season to go along with his 19 touchdowns. The Titans haven't lost a game in well over a year and they have a number of key players from last year's team.   Nazareth @ Prairie Ridge - 1 p.m. Saturday The Wolves (10-1) have looked very impressive in the playoffs so far, outscoring Marmion and …
