Laura Arboleda will earn an associate degree from McHenry County College two weeks before she graduates from Crystal Lake South High School.
Crystal Lake South High School student Laura Arboleda will graduate this May with her high school diploma and an associate degree from McHenry County College. In fact, she will receive her MCC degree two weeks before her high school graduation. She plans to transfer in the fall to University of Florida, Gainesville, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Arboleda wanted to get a jump-start on college and save money on tuition, so she enrolled in the Running Start program at MCC in summer 2010, where she started earning credit for college while still attending high school. “I realized that taking classes ahead of time would save me a considerable amount of money and I would accomplish my educational and career goals faster,” …

New water bottle dispensers were installed at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.
Today is Earth Day, but students in Community High School District 155 have been acting "eco-friendly" all year. Last fall, new water fountains were installed at Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South and Cary Grove high schools right next to the standard drinking fountains. The new fountains are similar to water dispensers featured on modern refrigerator doors. The "water bottle filler fountains" were designed so users can refill and reuse plastic water bottles or sports bottles, thereby eliminating refuse. The cool feature about the new machines is they calculate the number of plastic water bottles refilled, giving students and staff members a clear understanding of how much waste they've prevented. "In total, these stations have …

McHenry Ave. “We had 10 girls with long hair down to their shoulders doing it, they shaved their heads completely bald,” said Splitt, president elect of the Crystal Lake Kiwanis Club which organized the fundraiser. “They raised a good amount of money. It was very inspiring.” It took an hour for six barbers to shave the 60 heads of students and teachers, he said. St. Baldrick’s Foundation …
