CL Downtown Merchants hold 'Have a Heart Food Drive'

Food drive aims to restock shelves at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry.

It seems just like yesterday that Patch was covering the annual Community Harvest food drive on Thanksgiving Day. More than 1,000 volunteers showed up early Thanksgiving morning to sort and pack 85,985 pounds worth of food donations for the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, 257 King St. It may be hard to believe, but some of those supplies have already been depleted. The most frequently selected items by pantry patrons - like chili and soda crackers - are running in low supply. For that reason, the Downtown Crystal Lake merchants held their second annual "Have a Heart Food Drive," which concluded on Saturday. Many merchants offered special incentives for patrons dropping off donations. "We haven't gotten out to pick up the donations, yet, so we …

Crystal Lake Woman Reunited with Long Lost Dog Statue

Dog statue lost after it was placed in storage more than 20 years ago re-appears and is returned to its original owner, Hawley Haleblian.

A few weeks ago, Crystal Lake resident Hawley Haleblian was scanning through the Community Harvest Facebook page when one photograph caught her eye. It was a photograph of the Community Harvest's mascot, Simon, visiting Two Amigos Landscape Co. that jumped from the screen. Simon, a stuffed scarecrow, was sitting next to the statue of a big black dog.  "I looked at the photo and said that's my dog!" said Haleblian, who hadn't seen the statue in more than 20 years. "The minute I saw it I knew it was mine. I texted my kids and told them to get on Facbebook. They saw the picture and said 'that's your dog!'" Haleblian eventually picked up the phone and left a voice message for Maria Ortega, an owner at Two Amigos. She briefly explained how …

Estimated 1,000 Volunteers Turn Out for Community Harvest

The lobby of the Community Harvest site on Thanksgiving morning in Crystal Lake was packed by 8:30 a.m.

The crowd of people waiting at the Community Harvest on Thanksgiving morning was as big as any Black Friday gathering. But no one was pushing or shoving. No one was there to shop, or find a deal. Most folks were calmly enjoying a cup of coffee, or sipping hot chocolate while waiting their turn to help. The estimated 1,000 people arose early this Thanksgiving holiday, and arrived by 8 a.m. at the 22nd Annual Community Harvest in Crystal Lake. They were there for one main purpose: to help the Crystal Lake Food Pantry and those in need. "This is just so heartwarming and wonderful," said Community Harvest chairperson Judy Pelinski on Thanksgiving morning. "We live in a wonderful, wonderful community. This represents the true meaning of …

Community Harvest in Crystal Lake is Here!

More than 20,000 pounds of food and non-perishable donations were dropped off since Friday through Sunday in preparation for the Community Harvest in Crystal Lake event on Thursday.

'Tis the day for turkey and pie. But for many people in Crystal Lake, today marks the arrival of the 2012 Community Harvest. Donations last Friday began pouring in at the Community Harvest collection site, located this year in the Crystal Lake Plaza- unit 2D. On Friday, the Crystal Lake Jaycees traveled throughout the community and picked up 10,000 pounds of food and non-perishable donations from Crystal Lake schools. The Jaycees were expected to collect more school donations on Monday. Over the weekend, area churches delivered another 10,000 pounds in food donations, said Judy Pelinksi, who has served as chairperson of the Community Harvest for the past six years. Donations will be accepted through Thursday morning, when, at 8 a.m., …

Community Harvest in Crystal Lake: 3 Days Away

Members of the Crystal Lake Jaycees begin picking up food donations from schools today, and the public is welcome to bring donations to the Community Harvest Headquarters.

Maybe you've heard of the Community Harvest in Crystal Lake. The city-wide food collection drive is in its 22nd year. But if you've never donated, participated, or attended any of the Community Harvest events, you may not understand what it's all about. Most notably, volunteers gather to work on Thanksgiving morning. "No, we're not packing up Thanksgiving meals," said Community Harvest chairperson Judy Pelinski. "Thanksgiving meals have already gone out by then." "Community Harvest centers around the harvest theme, the day of giving," Pelinski said. "We have 700 people come to help us sort, pack and store thousands of pounds of food donations for the Crystal Lake Food Pantry." Joint Effort In its simplest terms, Community Harvest is a …
