CL City Leaders Suggest Decorative Fix for Cement Wall Near Veteran Acres

Officials from Crystal Lake and the McHenry County Transportation Department are working to improve the overall look of a new cement wall constructed on Walkup Road.

Crystal Lake leaders have suggested a decorative fix for the new cement wall along Walkup Road near Veteran Acres. The stone veneer would look similiar to new features installed at the Crystal Lake Plaza along Route 14 and the Del Webb Sun City entrance …

'Dream Gowns Bridal' Coming to Crystal Lake

Bridal shop will feature regular size bridal gowns as well as gowns for larger women.

Three years ago, Deborah Donaldson came to the realization that the bridal market for larger-sized women is underserved. "There needs to be a bridal shop that carries sizes above size 14 so everyone can enjoy the bridal experience," Donaldson told Crystal Lake City Council members last week. "We believe everyone has the right to look and feel beautiful on her wedding day." Donaldson plans to open Dream Gowns Bridal store at 16 W. Crystal Lake Plaza, Crystal Lake. The location is perfect, she told city council members, as it is located next to a bakery and flower shop. Council members unanimously voted in favor of approving a $10,000 New Retailer Job Creation and Investment Matching grant application for the business. (Council members Ellen…

CL Officials: New Cement Wall by Veteran Acres Not 'Aesthetically Pleasing'

Crystal Lake city officials are working with the McHenry County Transportation Department to determine how appearance of the new wall could be improved.

As road construction work progresses on Walkup Road and Route 176, a cement wall adjacent to the road and bikepath near Veteran Acres is catching the eye of city officials - and not in a good way. Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley told city council members during the recent  city council meeting that people have complained about the aesthetics of the cement wall and adjacent bike patch just north of Route 176. The wall is in what city officials call "a high profile area" and partial blocks the scenic view of Veteran Acres pond. "We've drafted a letter and sent it to the county, and I'm happy to say that the county has been receptive (to our concerns)," Shepley said. County officials have asked for suggestions on how to make the wall look …

CL Annexes Crystal Lake Rib House and Former Royal Oaks Antique Museum Site

The Crystal City Council recently approved annexation agreements for two separate parcels located on the perimeter of the city limits.

The Crystal Lake City Council recently approved annexation agreements with property owners of the Crystal Lake Rib House and the former Royal Oaks Antique Museum. At a city council meeting on March 19, councilmen approved an annexation agreement with the owner of land at 5116 E. Route 176. The site is home to the Crystal Lake Rib House and two adjacent vacant parcels, city documents show. The land, located at the corner of Pingree Road, also has a billboard. The property owner agreed to terms of the annexation as long as the existing uses were approved and permitted to remain. However, the owner did agree to have the billboard removed once its lease expires in 2019, city documents show. In approving the annexation agreement, the city …

Letter to Editor: Endorsement for Hubbard for Crystal Lake City Council

Resident Erin McElroy endorses candidate Cameron Hubbard for Crystal Lake City Council.

To Crystal Lake-Cary Patch: "Five years ago my husband and I moved to Crystal Lake. We grew up in Lake County and looked for a community that was safe, had good schools, and we also wanted a downtown district on the trainline. Crystal Lake offered this, and we were happy to call it home! I am proud and honored to call Cameron Hubbard a friend. There are many reasons to vote for Cameron on April 9th. For me, its simple. I look at my 16 month old, and think of all the hopes and dreams I have for him. Then I think about Cameron, a young and bright leader who is a product of this great city. He now wants to serve Crystal lake and raise his family here. He is committed to make Crystal Lake great for generations to come, and to attract families …
