NBC's Rob Elgas Recalls Playing Days at Crystal Lake Central

Now a co-anchor in Chicago, Elgas admires football in Crystal Lake

No, this Crystal Lake Central graduate won’t be coming home to watch the Crystal Lake South-Crystal Lake Central football game Friday night. He’ll be stuck in Chicago at the NBC studios on Michigan Avenue. But he’s the first one to congratulate the fans of these two rivals. By virtue of 16,000 votes on Facebook, the game is the station’s prep destination of the week. “We will have a crew doing a live remote for our 6 a.m. show,’’ Rob Elgas said. This game hits home for Elgas. After all, he is a 1992 graduate of Crystal Lake Central. The Tigers made the playoffs last year, ending a long drought. Elgas recalled a team that he played on during his senior season. He was a tight end on offense and a corner back on defense for a team that had …

Central's Season Ends as Kaneland Collects Turnovers

Kaneland defeats Central 34-7 in second round of class 5A playoffs.

Central was riding high on a seven-game winning streak, including an overtime thriller over Antioch in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. But that streak would come to an end with in a 34-7 loss to Kaneland Saturday night. Penalties had been a big problem for the Tigers (8-3) all year, but they were able to keep the errors from affecting the scoreboard. But unfortunately for Central, they added turnovers to their repetoire. Central fumbled the ball five times in the game, including four during a second half where they were trying to catch the Knights. The turnovers allowed Knights quarterback Joe Camiliere a number of chances to get into the end zone. Camiliere completed 18 of 27 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. The loss …

Kaneland Stands in Way of CLC's Goals

Tigers face undefeated Knights in second round.

Crystal Lake Central have won seven games in a row, but none near as important or thrilling as last Saturday's win over the Antioch Sequoits. Central came from behind by erasing a 14-point deficit at half-time to force overtime where they would make one of the wildest field goals you will see. The heart shown by the Central players is going to be needed when they take on Kaneland Saturday night. Kaneland (10-0) is coming off a resounding win over King, where they pounded the Jaguars 42-0. Senior quarterback Joe Camiliere, a three-year starter for the Knights, threw four touchdown passes and ran for another.  The Tigers know they will have their hands full when trying to stop the Kaneland passing attack. "It just comes down to will, whoever…

CLC Kicks Its Way Into Second Round

Tigers comeback victory in OT sets up game with Kaneland.

When No. 8 Crystal Lake Central faced off against No. 9 Antioch in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, both teams knew it was going to be a battle between two evenly matched teams. And that's exactly what it was as Tyler Fehring's game-winning field goal hit the cross bar before falling on the right side of a 24-21 CLC overtime victory. "I think our team has the most heart in the whole state. We work hard and we never give up, we're just one heart and one team," Central senior Austin Marsden said. The Tigers needed that heart when they fell behind 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter. After trading touchdowns in the first half—a four-yard run by Antioch's Dan Arden to start the scoring and a seven-yard run by Central's Dylan McKinney…

CLC Hopes Practice Makes Perfect Against Antioch

Tigers face Sequoits in 5A first round.

The No. 8 Crystal Lake Central Tigers (7-2) will square off against the No.9 Antioch Sequoits (7-2) in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Central is coming off yet another resounding win, defeating Woodstock 58-28 while Antioch was not so fortunate loosing 36-21. The Tigers can run the football with junior running back Gage Harrah and senior running backs Dyllon McKinney and Ryan Hines, who have a combined 2,514 yards rushing and 32 touchdowns scored. But the Sequoits have a ground weapon of their own in senior running back Vinnie Holm, who became the all-time points leader in Sequoits football history, surpassing running back Cameron White's record of 284.  With the explosive double-wing formation and Wild-Cat wrinkle for Crystal …

Tigers Blast Woodstock Before Playoffs

CLC gears up for post-season with 58-28 victory.

In a game that was virtually nothing more than a tune-up for Crystal Lake Central's trip to the playoffs, Central showed exactly why they believe they are a force to be reckoned with and why everyone else should think that too. The Tigers remained focused and smashed Woodstock 58-28. "Be physical, be physical," coach Matt Fralick told his players before the game. Gage Harrah listened. The junior running back had another monster game, running in two touchdowns and catching another one. Senior running back Ryan Hines also had a stellar game. Hines scored thee touchdowns of his own, including a 43-yard tackle-breaking run. "Tonight was a very well-earned performance for us. All of our touchdowns were really earned," Hines said. "Gage (Harrah…

One Last Tune-Up Before Playoffs

CLC looks for discipline in match-up with Woodstock.

With their win over Woodstock North last week, Crystal Lake Central etched its name in the playoff bracket with one game still to be played. Central will travel to Woodstock Friday night to finish up the regular season. The Tigers went back to their roots offensively last week enforcing its will on the ground. The tandem of junior running back Gage Harrah and senior running back Dyllon McKinney were once again a force to be reckoned with. One thing that must be corrected before the playoffs begin is Central's lack of discipline. Penalties have been a problem for CLC, although it hasn't shown up on the scoreboard. But McKinney says it will be fixed. "We just need to be more careful of what we are doing. We need to be smarter, watch the ball…

CLC Duo Runs Tigers Into the Playoffs

CLC clinches playoff birth with 40-0 win over Woodstock North.

Fans packed Owen Metcalf Field Friday night for one last chance to cheer on this year's seniors as Crystal Lake Central pounded Woodstock North 40-0. Woodstock looked dazed trying to figure out how to stop CLC's two-headed monster, senior running back Dyllon McKinney and junior running back Gage Harrah. Coming into the game, McKinney and Harrah had combined to score 20 touchdowns. The duo would add five more to their total before the night was through. McKinney and Harrah seemed to feed off each other throughout the game. "I really think it's our line, our line is really good and they just open the holes and we run really hard and keep on driving," McKinney said. Last week Central opened up the passing game, but against Woodstock they …

CLC Looks to Take Thunder Out of Woodstock

Tigers may add more wrinkles in home finale.

Crystal Lake Central is coming off an impressive 51-13 win over the Johnsburg Skyhawks last Friday. While handing the Skyhawks their third loss this season, the Tigers balanced their attack. This win drew high praise from CLC coach Matt Fralick while addressing his team after the win. "That was our most complete game this season," said Fralick. Central has been on a roll in recent weeks, ripping off four straight wins, three on the road, over formidable opponents. That's not going to change this week when they square off with the Woodstock North Thunder. Woodstock North is coming off their first Fox Valley Conference victory in their program's history with their win over cross-town rival Woodstock High School. North will be flying high …
