O'Toole plans to continue his education at Marquette University in Milwaukee. The 2013 class valedictorian for Crystal Lake Central High School is Ann Bandolik, of Crystal Lake. A coyote has been walking on the sidewalks and passing by homes on Monarch Drive in Crystal Lake in recent weeks, residents told the Northwest Herald. There have been no reports of pets being attacked by the coyote but one resident fears that could happen if the coyote remains in the neighborhood, according to the article. Residents in Algonquin and Lake in the Hills have reported several coyote sightings in recent weeks. Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Patch has an interactive map posted detailing the different reports and where the coyotes have been spotted. Annual parade will traverse through downtown Crystal Lake and end with a memorial service at Union Cemetery.
Crystal Lake American Legion Post 171 will conduct its annual Memorial Day Parade and Cemetery Service on Monday, May 27. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Crystal Lake Central High School, 45 W. Franklin St. From there, the parade route travels east on Franklin Avenue, north on Williams Street, and west on Woodstock Street to Union Cemetery. Following the parade, a memorial service will be held at the cemetery, located on Woodstock Street across the street from the Crystal Lake Municipal Complex. In the event on inclement weather, the Memorial Day parade will be cancelled and the memorial service will be held in the Field House at Crystal Lake Central High School.
McHenry County March for Babies starts at 9 a.m. Sunday at McHenry County College.
About 1,000 people are expected to gather at McHenry County College on Sunday for the McHenry County March for Dimes to Help Save Babies walk. Registration for the walk is at 8 a.m. at MCC, 8900 Route 14, in Crystal Lake. The 3.1-mile walk kicks off at 9 a.m. The Koenen Family of Crystal Lake will serve as McHenry County's March for Babies Ambassador Family in remembrance of their daughter Melinda, said Rowena Roxas, media spokesperson for March of Dimes. Melinda Koenen was born at 27 weeks gestation in August 2009 and fought every day of her life. She survived nearly seven months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, but was ultimately too sick and frail. She lives on through her family and the foundation they started in her memory, Roxas …

A 23-year-old Crystal Lake man faces a child pornography charge after local investigators say they found images of sexual abuse of children on his home computer, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Office press release. Torian L. Rodez, 23, of 1336 Skyridge Drive, Apt. A in Crystal Lake, has been charged with child pornography, which a class three felony, and is being held on a $25,000 bond, according to the news release. Rodez was arrested after police conducted a search of his home. Sheriff's office investigators along with the Crystal Lake Police Department worked together since early April 2013 when police say they discovered Rodez had been downloading the child porn, according to the news release. Many area beaches will be re-opening over the Memorial Day weekend for the summer season. Among the area hot spots, the popular beach at Three Oaks Recreation area will re-open on May 25 at 10 a.m. The marina and boat rental area at Three Oaks has been opened since early April. The Three Oaks website has more information on the many amenities available at Three Oaks and the parks hours of operation. Both of Crystal Lake's beaches, Main Beach at 300 Lake Shore Drive, and West Beach, at 2230 Lake Avenue, will re-open on May 25. Crystal Lake Park District will use state grant to renovate and improve Woodscreek Park, located at the corner of Golf Course and Ackman roads.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday announced a $15.3 million investment in local park projects throughout Illinois, and one Crystal Lake park stands to receive a piece of that allottment. Crystal Lake Park District will receive a $400,000 state grant and plans to use the money toward renovating and expanding Woodscreek Park, 1420 Willow Tree Dr., according to Jenny Leech, public information coordinator for the park district. Woodscreek Park is a popular, well-used park located on the southwest corner of Golf Course and Ackman roads on the city's southside. The park should be renovated and not replaced. It should NOT include a splash pad. As was voiced by a neighbors who attended the last meeting where we were told we would have a voice. Apparently based on the plans the neighborhood voice does not matter.   more ›
