A Final Game for Straumann, Jakubicek

Cary seniors go out in style in county all-star game.

Sunday night was one last opportunity for Megan Straumann and Claire Jakubicek to put on the Trojans' uniform in the 2011 McHenry County All-Star Basketball Games in Hebron. The two didn’t disappoint as Straumann scored 21 and Jakubicek added 18 but it wasn’t enough as the home team coached by Cary coaches Rod Saffert and Andy Donaldson lost 95-87 in the highest-scoring girls all-star game in the game’s nine-year history. Straumann hit five three-pointers in the game including three in a row during the first half where the home team fell behind by double figures but was led back by Jakubicek and company in the second half to take the lead but couldn’t hold on. For Straumann and Jakubicek, it was more about the experience than the outcome …

Jakubicek, Straumann Named Class 4A Honorable Mentions

Straumann and Jakubicek didn't move on in three-point contest but both received Class 4A honorable mention honors from the AP

Thursday night’s IHSA Class 4A state three-point preliminary at Illinois State University was a chance for Cary-Grove’s Meg Straumann and Claire Jakubicek to have some fun and put on the Trojan uniform one more time. With both of them in the same group of shooters, only one had a chance to advance. Unfortunately, Straumann and Jakubicek’s three-point stroke wasn’t enough as neither moved on to Friday’s state finals. Jakubicek made six out of 15 while Straumann made just one of her 15 shots. The magic number to advance to Friday night’s championship round was eight, which produced a four-person shoot-off. Jakubicek said that a problem with the net getting stuck on the loops of the rim may have slowed down her rhythm. “I was happy, all I …

Straumann, Jakubicek Ready for State Three-Point Contest

The two Cary-Grove seniors look to advance to the Class 4A state three-point finals Thursday night in Normal

Meg Straumann and Claire Jakubicek knew they were going to state no matter what happened on Feb. 25 in the sectional final against Geneva. Straumann and Jakubicek both have qualified for the state three-point shootout this weekend in Normal and will shoot in the preliminary round on Thursday night at 5 p.m at Illinois State University‘s Redbird Arena. The two Cary-Grove seniors took very different paths to making it to state. Straumann made nine of her 15 shots in the final round last Thursday to advance automatically while Jakubicek made eight and had to endure two shoot-offs to advance. Straumann said it’s an experience that she will treasure and looks forward to. “I’ve never been farther than the first round of sectionals I don’t think …

A Look Back at Girls' Basketball 2010-11

Trojans finish 27-4 in senior season of Jakubicek, Straumann and Geegan

As the 2010-11 Cary-Grove girls’ basketball season went on, momentum continued to roll for a potential berth in the state finals and while the Trojans fell two steps short of state, the team saw many highlights including advancing to the program’s first sectional final in a decade and Claire Jakubicek breaking Eve Barry’s career scoring record. Jakubicek broke Barry’s record of 1,232 points on Dec. 5 against Johnsburg and finished her Cary career with an even 1,700 points while averaging just under 20 points per game during the 2010-11 season as Cary finished at 27-4. C-G also reeled off two double digit winning streaks during the season including a 14-game streak that ended in the sectional title game. The 55-53 loss to Geneva in the …

It had been a very long calendar year since Cary-Grove lost to Geneva in the Huntley Sectional semifinal with Thursday night’s rematch in the IHSA Class 4A Jacobs Sectional championship game an opportunity for the Trojans to even the score with the Vikings. The two teams fought back and forth but in the end, two free-throws by Geneva’s Katelyn Allen with 3.6 seconds remaining gave Geneva a 55-53 victory and ended Cary’s chances of winning a sectional for the first time in 22 years. Cary (27-4) ran into some early foul trouble as starter Paige Lincicum got her second foul just 3:02 into the contest, limiting the C-G’s defensive effort. The first big run of the game came from Geneva as the Vikings ran off nine straight points late in the …

Cary wins 12th straight game with 50-19 win over Larkin in Class 4A Dundee-Crown Regional semifinal

Even at this time of year in postseason, there is always room for improvement. Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team could say that after missing several lay-ups and close shots Tuesday night in the IHSA Class 4A Dundee-Crown Regional semifinal against Larkin.
