Pingree Road Slated to Re-Open Friday!

A summer-long construction project nears its end, and section of Pingree Road north of Congress Parkway is expected to open mid-morning on Friday, Oct. 5.

The City of Crystal Lake is on schedule to officially re-open Pingree Road on Friday, October 5, 2012, around mid-day. Pingree Road near Congress Parkway has been closed since the beginning of May. The closure has been a huge inconvenience for residents living north of the Metra railroad tracks near Pingree Road. It also has detoured drivers trying to travel between Route 14 and Crystal Lake Avenue. The construction project was completed ahead of schedule due to the dry summer conditions, and lack of rain, city officials said. "The city appreciates the patience and cooperation of our residents and area business owners during the road closure, which was completed ahead of schedule," the city webpage states.  The construction improvements …

Communities Up Mosquito Treatments to Combat West Nile Virus

The McHenry County Health Department confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in the county this week.

Area communities are upping their mosquito spray applications with the hopes of combating West Nile Virus in the area.  The Lake in the Hills Village Board last week approved an additional spray treatment for the month of September. The treatment will be done in conjunction with the village of Huntley and the city of Crystal Lake.  Clarke — the provider for the village's mosquito spray applications — encouraged the additional application in a Aug. 31 letter to the village, noting that the area remained at a moderate to high risk for a West Nile Virus outbreak.  Clarke has conducted all four contracted mosquito treatments and the recent board approval will allow for a fifth application in September. The cost is $4,500.  Also this week, the …

Backyard Chickens: Not in Crystal Lake, but Coming Soon to a Suburb Nearby?

Part of a series on local food and suburban farming.

Long Grove soon may become the first village in Lake County that allows its residents to keep chickens. In McHenry County, the city of McHenry also is considering welcoming backyard hens. This summer, the Crystal Lake City Council voted against chickens, but it was a close vote, decided by the city’s mayor. Other suburbs that allow chickens include Evanston, Oak Park, St. Charles, Naperville and a few other west suburbs. In Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Madison residents can keep hens. The city of Chicago always has allowed chickens. “It’s almost backwards from what you would expect. You would think there would be chickens in the country and you would think as you get closer to the city, it would be more restrictive. But the city allows …
