What To Do If The FVC Changes Again?

Trojans coaches discuss their thoughts on Johnsburg possibly leaving the Fox Valley Conference.

Over the past month, it has been reported that Johnsburg is looking to leave the Fox Valley Conference which would put the conference back at 13 teams if the Skyhawks were to bolt back to the Big Northern Conference. I took the opportunity to ask some coaches at Cary about what the conference should do if the conference goes back to 13 teams and if the conference should go to 16 teams instead of just looking for another 14th team. Softball coach Tammy Olson said that it probably wouldn’t have a major impact in her opinion. “It (would) be hard but it really wouldn’t affect our side of the conference,” Olson said. “It really doesn’t affect us that much but a lot depends on who would come in and that is totally a superintendent’s discussion …

Recapping the South Shootout

Cary completes summer schedule, looks ahead to winter.

It was a long weekend for Cary-Grove’s boys basketball team, playing seven one-hour games in the span of just 26 hours, with the Trojans going 4-3 overall while falling in the consolation championship game at the Crystal Lake South Shootout. The tournament ended the summer schedule for Cary, which will head back to the court in early November to begin the 2011-12 season. During Saturday’s last two games, Cary made 13 three-pointers in advancing past Prairie Ridge before losing to Rockford Jefferson. Cary coach Ralph Schuetzle said that it is something that’s part of the game and why Jefferson took advantage early Saturday evening. “It’s part of the offense, but we got to attack the basket a little bit better,” Schuetzle said. “That’s the …

A Final Game for Straumann, Jakubicek

Cary seniors go out in style in county all-star game.

Sunday night was one last opportunity for Megan Straumann and Claire Jakubicek to put on the Trojans' uniform in the 2011 McHenry County All-Star Basketball Games in Hebron. The two didn’t disappoint as Straumann scored 21 and Jakubicek added 18 but it wasn’t enough as the home team coached by Cary coaches Rod Saffert and Andy Donaldson lost 95-87 in the highest-scoring girls all-star game in the game’s nine-year history. Straumann hit five three-pointers in the game including three in a row during the first half where the home team fell behind by double figures but was led back by Jakubicek and company in the second half to take the lead but couldn’t hold on. For Straumann and Jakubicek, it was more about the experience than the outcome …

Cary Falls in Regional Semifinal

Trojans try slowing game down against Huntley but come up short in 44-27 loss to end season

The plan worked for 24 minutes. After being victimized by ten three-pointers each time Cary-Grove played Huntley this season, the Trojans tried a new approach Wednesday night in the IHSA Class 4A Prairie Ridge Regional in Crystal Lake. Cary held the ball for 30-45 seconds each time they had the ball for the first three quarters before Huntley was able to take control of the game, outscoring C-G 21-4 in the final quarter to take home a 44-27 victory. The two teams didn’t score much in the opening half of play as a 9-1 Huntley run in the first quarter gave the Red Raiders a 12-9 lead after the first eight minutes. Cary held Huntley scoreless the first six minutes of the second quarter while going on a 7-0 run of their own to take a 16-12 …

Trojans' Advance to Sectional Championship Game

Straumann scores 19 while Jakubicek adds 15 as Cary moves on to first sectional title game since 2001 with 57-37 win over Huntley in Jacobs Sectional

Tuesday night was an opportunity for Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team to do something the program had not done in a decade. With a win over Fox Valley Conference rival Huntley in the IHSA Class 4A Jacobs Sectional semifinals, the Trojans would play for a sectional title for the first time since 2001. Cary came out a bit slow but turned it up as the game went on and used a 20-2 run in the second half to defeat the Red Raiders 57-37. The Trojans will play Geneva, who defeated Hononegah 70-60 in Tuesday's other semfinal in Thursday night’s title game at 7:30 p.m. Geneva defeated Cary in last season's sectionals to end the Trojans' season. After both teams had trouble scoring early, C-G (27-3) went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-3 lead and led …

Trojans' Break Four-Game Losing Streak

Richter scores 18 to help Cary get 46-43 road win at Crystal Lake South

With a four-game losing streak coming into Tuesday night’s Fox Valley Conference game with Crystal Lake South, Cary-Grove’s boys’ basketball team needed a jolt of energy and confidence. The Trojans got that jolt with a 20-point opening quarter and hung on for a 46-43 win over the Gators in Crystal Lake. C-G (9-13, 3-4) started soundly, going on an early 10-0 run to take a 13-3 lead and led 20-8 after one quarter of play on the strength of three 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes by Jon Guay. After that opening quarter however, points began hard to come by for Cary as South pulled within eight points in the second quarter before Cary went on another 6-0 run to take a 14-point lead at 28-14. South would go on an 11-1 run lead to finish …

A Perfect 10 to End Home Season for Cary-Grove Girls'

Trojans honor seniors Straumann, Jakubicek and Geegan in 82-29 win over Jacobs for tenth straight win and finish 10-0 in FVC Valley play.

After clinching the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title Friday night with a commanding victory over Huntley, you would think that Cary-Grove may suffer a letdown Saturday afternoon in their last home game of the season against Jacobs. The Trojans’ three seniors, Meg Straumann, Claire Jakubicek and Johanna Geegan would not allow that to happen as Cary finished the FVC Valley season with a perfect 10-0 record with a 82-29 win over the Golden Eagles at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium to complete a weekend where C-G outscored their opponents 141-48. Cary (23-3, 10-0) got out of the gate as fast as they did Friday night, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the game. Jacobs however would not allow C-G to get a huge lead off the bat, going on…

Cary-Grove Falls to Huntley's Long Range Attack

Red Raiders make ten three-pointers in 57-27 win over Trojans

It was a tale of two completely different shooting nights for Huntley and Cary-Grove Tuesday night in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys' basketball action at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Red Raiders didn’t seem to miss and the Trojans could only muster baskets by two players the first three and a half quarters of play as Huntley made ten three-pointers and cruised to a 57-27 victory. Huntley (15-4, 4-1) began quickly, scoring the first six points of the game and 17 of the first 20 to put the game out of reach very early on. The Red Raiders made eight three-pointers in the first half in taking a 32-12 lead into the half. Huntley kept their foot down on Cary, starting the second half on a 12-2 run to end any doubt of the game’s …

Trojans Pass Test, Defeat Hersey

Cary sees 15-point lead disappear but senior leaders Jakubicek, Straumann will Trojans to 57-52 win.

Sometimes in a big game, you need your stars to shine the brightest. On Saturday afternoon for Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team against Hersey, the stars shined as seniors Claire Jakubicek and Meg Straumann combined for 43 points and junior Paige Lincicum clamped down on Huskies star guard Megan Rogowski, holding her to just 19 points, six below her scoring average, as the Trojans came away with a 57-52 victory inside Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Cary (19-3) started slow, falling behind 9-2 in the early minutes of the game before going on a 7-2 run to pull back within two and trailed 14-9 after one quarter. The second quarter was dominated by the Trojans, who started the quarter on a 15-2 run and finished the quarter outscoring the …

Jacobs Survives Double Overtime Marathon With Cary-Grove

Golden Eagles outscore Trojans 8-2 in the second overtime to get 59-53 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play

Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division showdown between Jacobs and Cary-Grove started without much thought of how long it might take to finish. The two teams battled back and forth through four quarters and into two overtimes before the Golden Eagles prevailed 59-53 over the host Trojans. Jacobs (11-8, 3-0) jumped out early on the road, going on an 11-0 first quarter run to take a 14-3 lead after one quarter. Cary (8-11, 2-2) would strike right back with a 9-0 run of their own to start the second quarter and would take a 21-20 lead into halftime. After a third quarter that saw the Golden Eagles retake the lead at 32-31, the fourth quarter began with Jacobs going on a 6-0 run to take a five-point advantage and would hold the …
