The Trojans held close the whole first half, trailing by just two at the break before falling 51-42. Olivia Jakubicek had 12 points to lead C-G while Joslyn Nicholson added 11. On Saturday, Cary lost their second game in as many days with a 55-30 loss to Lake Zurich. Jakubicek once again led Cary with 14 points while Paige Lincicum scored nine. Richter and Guay each score 11 as Huntley clinches division title with 64-42 win over Trojans
In their final game of the Fox Valley Conference season, Huntley and Cary-Grove’s boys’ basketball team had two completely different goals Friday night. The Red Raiders were looking for a conference championship while the Trojans were looking to finish the conference season with a .500 record. Tyler Brunschon scored a game-high 24 points as Huntley made ten 3-pointers for the second straight time against Cary-Grove and clinched the FVC Valley title with a 64-42 victory in Huntley. After Cary’s Matt Aulert scored the first two points of the game, Huntley (21-4, 9-1) went on to score the game’s next eight points and 13 of the next 15 to take a 13-4 lead. Lincicum scores 11 as Trojans overcome early foul trouble to beat Streamwood 50-29 to win Dundee-Crown Regional
After Cary-Grove’s Claire Jakubicek got her second foul 1:22 into Thursday night’s IHSA Class 4A Dundee-Crown Regional final against Streamwood, you would think alarm bells may go off for the Trojans. The bell did go off for sophomore Joslyn Nicholson, who kept Cary in the game in the first quarter while Jakubicek was on the bench, scoring six of her ten points in that opening quarter. When Jakubicek did return, the top-seeded Trojans ran away and took home their third regional title in the last four years with a 50-29 win over the No. 2 seed Sabres in Carpentersville. With Jakubicek sitting, Nicholson scored six of the nine points Cary would score in the quarter and took a 9-8 lead into the second quarter. As the second quarter began, …

Posey scores career-high 17 while Richter adds 15 as Cary defeats McHenry 54-47 in FVC Valley play
On a night where Cary-Grove honored their five senior boys basketball players along with senior volleyball players Kelly Lamberti and Colleen Smith, it was one senior who stole the show. Alex Posey scored a career-high 17 points as the Trojans got back to the .500 mark in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division, holding on for a 54-47 win over McHenry at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Cary (10-13, 4-4) was able to jump out to an early lead on the strength of a 10-4 run that lasted from the first quarter into the second that gave C-G a 10-8 lead. Cary would extend the lead to six by halftime at 23-17 and grew the lead to nine by the early part of the third quarter. The Warriors would go on a 6-1 run to pull within 36-31 before Cary responded…

The leading scorer in Cary-Grove school history is the subject of another set of oddball questions
This version of Off the Record with….features Claire Jakubicek, who has been averaging over 20 points a game for Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team since the beginning of the new year. I sat down with her after Saturday’s FVC Valley win over McHenry to talk about things seriously and not so seriously about basketball and other topics. Andy Schmidt: On a scale of 1-10, how much pressure if there being the top seed at the regional? Claire Jakubicek: Probably like a 6 or 7 AS: If you were going to become a pro wrestler, what would your name be? CJ: Cool Claire AS: What is one thing you wish you could do but can’t? CJ: Fly. That would be awesome AS: Your favorite basketball team of all-time? CJ: UConn women when they were winning and had …

Trojans get to 20 wins for fourth straight year with 61-27 victory over Gators
Wednesday night’s girls’ basketball Fox Valley Conference Valley Division battle between Cary-Grove and Crystal Lake South saw two teams on the complete different end of the spectrum, record-wise. The Trojans got a complete effort from start to finish and won their 20th game of the season, defeating the Gators 61-27. It is the fourth straight year Cary has reached the 20-win mark. C-G (20-3, 7-0) scored the first four points of the game and 11 of the first 13 in opening up an early lead and led 18-7 after one quarter of play. South (2-19, 0-7) tried to get back into the game, scoring the first five points of the second quarter to pull within six but could get no closer as Cary responded with a 6-0 run of their own to retake a 12-point …

17-4 Hersey comes to Cary to face the 18-3 Trojans in a game that could go in seeing how far Cary can advance in regionals
It’s a game that has been looked at all season as a barometer on how far Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team could get in postseason play. That game comes up Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as Hersey, who went 27-9 and finished fourth in Class 4A last season and 17-4 this season heading into Friday night, comes to Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium to face the 18-3 Trojans. It’s a game that will feature two dominating players in C-G’s Claire Jakubicek, who has averaged 21.6 points per game since the beginning of the calendar and will play at Northern Illinois and Hersey’s Megan Rogowski, who is averaging 24.8 points a game and has committed to play at DePaul. Cary coach Rod Saffert knows that his team has a tall task with Rogowski and the rest of …

Cary jumps out to 35-8 lead and cruises to 57-32 win over Dundee-Crown to improve to 6-0 in the conference and 18-3 overall
With a game against state-ranked Hersey looming on Saturday afternoon at home, Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team had to be careful not to overlook Fox Valley Conference Valley Division rival Dundee-Crown Tuesday night as the second half of divisional play got underway. The Trojans certainly didn’t look past the Chargers, opening up a 27-point lead in the first half and cruising to a 57-32 win over D-C in Carpentersville. Cary (18-3, 6-0) began quickly, starting the game by scoring 18 of the first 22 points of the contest. Cary continued the onslaught in the second quarter, scoring the 14 points while holding Dundee-Crown scoreless for the first 4:51 of the quarter to take a 35-8 lead. However, the Chargers would not quit late in the …

Cary makes two shots in second half but squeaks out 32-27 win over Crystal Lake South to improve to 2-0 in FVC Valley Division
The last time Cary-Grove and Crystal Lake South played each other, the two teams combined to score 74 points in a 42-32 win by the Gators. Friday night at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium, the Trojans scored the exact same number of points but this time came out on the positive end in a 32-27 win over South in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play despite making just two shots in the second half. The two teams did not have the best of shooting nights as the two teams combined to make just two field goals in the first four minutes of the game before South would get a 6-4 lead late in the quarter. Cary (8-9, 2-0) responded with a 9-3 run to end the quarter including a Matt Aulert basket at the buzzer. The teams battled back and forth in the …

The debut of this twice weekly segment starts with the Trojans junior reserve guard
Today begins a new feature as I ask players and coaches about things that don't involve the current team or situation or even sports at all. Some questions may be interesting, some may be silly or just odd but no matter what it will be fun. The series begins with Cary-Grove girls' basketball player Alyssa Lee as I caught up with her after practice. Andy Schmidt: What’s your favorite Looney Tunes character? Alyssa Lee: Bugs Bunny Q: Best TV show you’ve ever seen? A: Pretty Little Liars Q: What sport do you watch most besides basketball? A: Football Q: Have you ever Googled yourself? A: (laughing)…..No Q: You get to have dinner with three famous people, who would they be? A: Taylor Swift because she is my favorite musician, Oprah and Bill …
