Phillips earned salutatorian honors by achieving a 4.585 grade point average.
Community High School District 155 announced Hannah Phillips, of Cary, earned salutatorian honors for the Class of 2013 at Cary-Grove High School. Phillips plans to continue her education at Michigan State University. The 2013 class valedictorian for Cary-Grove High School is Ryan DiCicco. Eight high school seniors will compete for the title of Mr. Cary Grove 2013 during the 6th Annual Mr. CG Showcase this Tuesday. The competition - which focuses on the talents of the contestants - is set for 5:30 p.m. May 21, at Cary-Grove High School, 2208 Three Oaks Rd., Cary. The contestants will attempt to wow the crowd and judges with their individual talents. "This event is sure to provide some fantastic entertainment and certainly amuse audience members," a CG Student Council press release states. New water bottle dispensers were installed at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.
Today is Earth Day, but students in Community High School District 155 have been acting "eco-friendly" all year. Last fall, new water fountains were installed at Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South and Cary Grove high schools right next to the standard drinking fountains. The new fountains are similar to water dispensers featured on modern refrigerator doors. The "water bottle filler fountains" were designed so users can refill and reuse plastic water bottles or sports bottles, thereby eliminating refuse. The cool feature about the new machines is they calculate the number of plastic water bottles refilled, giving students and staff members a clear understanding of how much waste they've prevented. Tiger and Trojan varsity cheerleading teams are traveling today to the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading State Finals Competition in Bloomington.
Three area high schools will be represented at the Illinois State Association's competitive cheerleading state finals competition in Bloomington this weekend. Cary-Grove's Varsity Cheerleading team, which placed first at sectionals on Jan. 26, and Crystal Lake Central's Varsity squad, which took third at sectionals, will both compete in the prelimary round scheduled today, Friday, Feb. 1, at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. Crystal Lake Central's cheerleaders will perform at 6:05 p.m., and Cary-Grove is scheduled to take the floor at 7:55 p.m., according to the IHSA website. In an effort to familiarize teachers and students with the sounds of gunfire, Cary-Grove High School will conduct a lock-down drill on Wednesday where police officers plan to fire blanks in the hallway. Cary-Grove Principal Jay Sargeant explained in a letter to parents the drill is part of a districtwide effort to increase student safety. Sargeant asked parents to discuss the drill ahead of time to ease any possible emotional reactions from hearing the sounds. "The simulation will take approximately 15-20 minutes, during which time teachers will secure their rooms, draw curtains, and keep their students from traveling throughout the building," Sargeant said. All four Community High School District 155 schools will be represented at the Byron Sectional Cheerleading Competition on Saturday, the Northwest Herald reports. Cary-Grove, Prairie Ridge, Crystal Lake South and Crystal Lake Central's competitive cheerleading squads will participate in the Large Team Division, the Herald reports. Crystal Lake Central's cheer team won the Fox Valley Conference Division title on Monday. Students collected, wrapped and donated an estimated $20,000 worth of Christmas gifts for students in need at Richard J. Daley Academy in Chicago.
A massive 3-foot-tall pile of packages crowded the front office at Cary-Grove High School by Thursday morning. Nearby, a miniature artificial Christmas tree was dwarfed by the more than 750 gifts, all wrapped in colorful holiday paper and gift bags. Each package bore a gift tag with the name of a child from Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy, 5024 S. Wolcott Ave., in Chicago. The "From" designation on many tags simply read: "Santa." "This is the most (gifts) we've ever collected," said Cary-Grove High School senior Patrick Kelly. Kelly is the president of the school's Interact Club, which coordinated the school-wide gift collection drive culminating in an estimated $20,000 worth of toys and clothing donations, school officials said. …

Graduating seniors from Cary-Grove High School Class of 2012 had an ACT composite score of 24.1, the highest in the school's history, according to Principal Jay Sargeant.
Cary-Grove High School is enjoying an upward trend when it comes to American College Test (ACT) composite scores. For the fourth consecutive year, seniors at Cary-Grove have increased the school's composite ACT score. The Trojan's graduating class of 2009 had a 22.9 ACT composite score, said Cary-Grove Principal Jay Sargeant. The class of 2010 increased that to 23.1, and 2011 graduates delivered a 23.4. Not to be outdone, the 400-plus seniors from the Class of 2012 achieved a 24.1 ACT composite score, Sargeant said. It's the highest score ever for Cary-Grove, he said.
