Complaints from Cary residents receiving unwanted copies of newspapers in front of their homes spurred a proposed ordinance meant to prevent littering and prevent distribution of such publications, according to the Northwest Herald. The summer season is almost upon us. Find out when area pools and beaches will be re-opening for the summer.
Many area beaches will be re-opening over the Memorial Day weekend for the summer season. Among the area hot spots, the popular beach at Three Oaks Recreation area will re-open on May 25 at 10 a.m. The marina and boat rental area at Three Oaks has been opened since early April. The Three Oaks website has more information on the many amenities available at Three Oaks and the parks hours of operation. Both of Crystal Lake's beaches, Main Beach at 300 Lake Shore Drive, and West Beach, at 2230 Lake Avenue, will re-open on May 25. Eight high school seniors will compete for the title of Mr. Cary Grove 2013 during the 6th Annual Mr. CG Showcase this Tuesday. The competition - which focuses on the talents of the contestants - is set for 5:30 p.m. May 21, at Cary-Grove High School, 2208 Three Oaks Rd., Cary. The contestants will attempt to wow the crowd and judges with their individual talents. "This event is sure to provide some fantastic entertainment and certainly amuse audience members," a CG Student Council press release states. The Cary-Grove High School girls track team placed second overall at the Belvidere (North) girls sectional track and field meet on May 9 with 75 points. Crystal Lake residents make an average income of about $78,488 while Cary residents make an average income of $98,454.
A look at income levels in suburban towns with Metra stops provides a glimpse at the disparity in wealth throughout the area, according to an interactive map posted on Crain's Chicago Business Journal. Among all Chicago and suburban Metra stops, Cary ranked as the 40th highest income with an average income of $98,454 while Crystal Lake ranked as the 78th highest income at $78,488, according to Crain's. Cary residents have between 10.1 to 30 percent of the highest average incomes while Crystal Lake residents have between 30.1 to 50 percent of the highest average incomes, according to the map. A Cary business owner pleaded guilty Monday to wire fraud in federal court in Rockford, according to a press release from the U.S. District Attorney's Office. Clare Thomas Anderson, 44, owned and operated Anderson International Global, LLC, as well as other companies in Illinois and Florida, and "between April 2009 and January 2013, he schemed to defraud over $1 million from more than 10 victims that did business with the companies he operated," according to the news release. Through these businesses, Anderson contracted to sell wood pulp and other raw materials to manufacturers, brokers and suppliers, which were usually located in foreign countries. Mark Kownick was sworn in Tuesday as the 27th mayor for the village of Cary, replacing Tom Kierna who did not run for re-election this past April, according to the Northwest Herald. Under his first order of business as the new village president, Kownick declared Wednesday Tom and Faith Kierna Day in Cary in honor of Kierna and his wife, Faith, according to the Northwest Herald. During his tenure, Kownick plans to focus on updating Cary's comprehensive plan and bringing new businesses to the village, according to the article.

Motorists across Illinois have been paying more at the pumps this week, more than the majority of states, according to AAA. Here are the lowest prices in the Crystal Lake-Cary area.
The majority of states may be experiencing a drop in gas prices, but not Illinois and other parts of the Midwest, according to AAA. Record rainfall that led to flooding and reduced production related to refineries shifting over to "summer-blend" gasoline are part of the reason, reports AAA. There was also an explosion at a Detroit refinery on April 27, though that incident was not expected to contribute to higher prices for motorists. The current average price for regular unleaded in Illinois is $3.95. Last month, the average was $3.84. A year ago the average was $4.02.
