Area Businesses Prep for Paczki Demand, Fat Tuesday

This year, Fat Tuesday will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Sugar Hills Bakery employee Devin Hammond wrapped up a few paczki— a lemon and a raspberry — in a brown paper bag Monday afternoon, the day before the Fat Tuesday rush. The Algonquin bakery, 644 S. Main St., makes between 2,000 and 3,000 of the fried dough, a Polish specialty that has become synonymous with Fat Tuesday. Sugar Hills makes gourmet paczki, including fresh blueberry with whipped cream, cherry with whipped cream and strawberry with cream cheese. “I eat so many of them, it’s ridiculous,” Hammond said. Hammond said the bakery will open at 6 a.m. Tuesday, two hours earlier than usual. Last year, there was a line for the paczki, she said. Several other area business will also be offering up the sweet treat, which is popular for Fat…

'American Pickers' Star Stops by Barrington Store

Danielle Colby Cushman visited with the staff of Grassroots over Memorial Day weekend.

A reality TV star made an appearance at Barrington’s Grassroots store this weekend. Danielle Colby Cushman of the History Channel’s American Pickers stopped by to visit with Todd Rhodes and his staff on Sunday. Cushman is well-known for the show, which profiles the lives of two men who refurbish unique and often historical items and sell them in their shop.  Cushman and her husband recently opened a new store — 4 Miles 2 Memphis — in LeClaire, Iowa, and want to feature some of Rhode’s merchandise. “I’ve known her for about a year,” Rhodes said of Cushman. “I met Mike (Wolfe of American Pickers) and then was able to get a hold of Danielle. We had a few meetings and she liked our concept,” he said. The Grassroots department inside of 4 Miles…

Cary Welcomes New Business, Proclaims C-G Week

The Village of Cary presented the key to the village to the Cary-Grove High School Volleyball team Tuesday night.

When an occurrence happens in Cary, residents should be alerted, according to Bob Heldman, who addressed the Cary Village Board Tuesday night with concerns about the Cary Police Department reporting crimes and alerts to residents. Heldman says he would like to see things that are going on in the ‘headlines,’ which would cutback on calls to the police department and deter people from who may want to break the law. He suggested utilizing the Cary News Weekly, which is an email blast service that is sent once a week to subscribers, to inform them about happenings in the village. Cary Trustee Rick Dudek said the village is close to brining out a new website, which would allow departments to post information concerning a variety of issues.   …

Business Spotlight: In Home Personal Services

A senior care provider that does it all.

This week, Cary Patch puts In Home Personal Services in the business spotlight. Local editor Quincy Hodges sits down with Michael Collura, President and CEO of In Home Personal Services, for a Q&A session.      What does In-home personal services do? We are a senior home-care provider. We provide medical and non-medical services to seniors in the comfort of their own home. We do this through Medicare as well as through private-pay. We’re one of the largest agencies in the area that can provide a complete continuum of care to a senior. We work from Chicago to Rockford and all over the state of Illinois to do that. The care is safe and affective and necessary to many seniors, who want to gain independence.   How does the contact process work…

New Businesses Struggle in Tough Economic Conditions

The Village of Cary has seen businesses come and go, due to the economic environment.

For any business starting out, a lot has to take place, including market research, writing a business plan, gathering resources and access to capital. The Cary’s Corner Shopping Center has seen businesses come and go. O’Reilly Auto Parts opened earlier this year, along with Rack & Roll, which has now closed. “I think with the case of the pool hall, that was a great idea but the business plan wasn’t sustainable because they were targeting a young audience with discretionary income, which is really challenging right now,” Mayor Tom Kierna said. Kierna said he doesn’t have details on what the Rack &Roll business plan was but said the economic environment is tough on new businesses. “It’s harder to get established because you don’t have that …

The Cary's Corner Shopping Center is, unfortunately, the least attractive retail property in the town of Cary. This is a shame as it's one of the most visible shopping areas to drivers on the heavily traveled Route 14. It has an outdated facade and a crumbled parking lot featuring negligible landscaping. If it were possible, it would be to the community's long-range economical benefit to aid the …   more ›

Village Board Expects Small Decline in Population

Mercy Hospital at Three Oaks Road and Route 31, Census Results, Police equipment, and a sign for O'Reilly's discussed.

At the Feb. 15 Village board meeting, all members were present, and all proposed initiatives passed. Mayor Tom Kierna announced that Dan Colby will be presenting plans for Mercy Hospital’s proposed site at Route 31 and Three Oaks Road in Crystal Lake during the upcoming Mar. 1, 2011 meeting. At the same meeting Kierna will introduce a resolution to approve the proposed plans at that corner. Kierna is optimistic that the hospital would bring new businesses along Three Oaks Road. The variance for the wall sign at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 356 Northwest Highway, was approved. Mayor Kierna remarked that staff, “worked tirelessly” in cooperation with O’Reilly’s, and that the Village was cooperative in orchestrating the deal. O’Reilly’s is projected …

Sage Products Receives Stimulus Funds For Expansion Project

Funds are in addition to those awarded to the village

Sage Products in Cary already is the village's largest employer, but when its facility expansion is completed by mid-2011 its workforce also should increase.  The expansion is being funded in part by nearly $5.7 million in bonds secured under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, which was signed into law in early 2009. The ability to seek the interest free bonds was made possible when the McHenry County Board chose Sage Products project, earlier this month.   The board was in charge of the $21.7 million in stimulus money allocated to the county, Deputy County Administrator John Labaj said. Labaj said the funds were used to pay for three projects including Sage's expansion, and were awarded on a first come first serve basis. When …
