500 Santas to Run Through Crystal Lake to Help Kids Throughout County

Organizers of the Kiwanis Club's 'Santa Run/ Walk for Kids' have ordered additional Santa suits to accommodate the growing number of participants.

  What better way for Santa to burn off some of those extra holiday calories than to run a 5K race? And, what's good for one Santa is good for hundreds of Santas, right? Already, more than 350 participants have registered for the first-ever Santa Run/ Walk for Kids slated for 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in Crystal Lake. Organizers are expecting more than 500 runners. The Kiwanis Club of Crystal Lake is hosting the 5K run/walk, during which runners will don Santa suits, pants, hats, belts and beards and make their merry way through downtown Crystal Lake. Children will receive a pair of reindeer antlers to wear for the event. Interest is so ho-ho-ho high in the Santa Run/Walk, organizers have already ordered an additional 150 Santa suits, said …

Former McHenry County Man Named Big Brother of the Year

Jeremy Weith has been a mentor for the past seven years for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Jeremy Weith, a newlywed from Woodstock who recently relocated to Milwaukee, was matched seven years ago with then 6-year old Harry of Woodstock.  Even though he moved out of state, Weith consistently keeps up his bi-weekly commitment to Harry. Weith says he volunteered to be a Big Brother after graduating from college to “give back and share some of my good fortune with someone in need.”  “Jeremy is a long-term mentor whose volunteer service exemplifies how Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring improves the odds for children to succeed in and out of school,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County Executive Director Robyn Ostrem. “Their match has weathered adversity while Jeremy guided Harry through poor choices he was making at …
