When Fishing, What to Keep and What to Throw Back

The Illinois Department of Health issued advisories for specific fish caught in area lakes, watersheds and Nippersink Creek.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recently announced its 2013 consumption advisories, which maps out advisories placed on specific fish in Illinois waters, according to a IDPH press release.  The advisories specify how often people should eat certain sport fish. The Illinois Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program screens fish samples from approximately 40 bodies of water each year for contamination from 14 banned pesticides, industrial chemicals and methylmercury. “Fish can be an important part of a balanced diet and the advisories are not meant to discourage people from eating fish, but should be used as a guideline to help people decide the types of fish to eat, how often and how to prepare the fish to reduce possible contaminants," …

Crystal Lake's Amy Rink Makes UW Whitewater Softball Team

Freshman from Crystal Lake will play on the 2012-2013 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team.

WHITEWATER, Wis. 03/26/2013 -- Amy Rink, a freshman physical education major from Crystal Lake, made the 2012-13 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team. The UW-Whitewater softball team has won eight WIAC regular-season titles, with the most recent in 2009. With nine starters returning from last season, the team is hopeful that with this established experience, anything is possible. "The team has worked at getting stronger and quicker so I believe that will help us a lot, especially late in the season," said Brenda Volk, head coach. "These athletes have worked hard so far, so I am anxious to see how this season goes." When the players are not on the field, they are giving back to the community. Crystal Lake to Serve as Destination for Prairie State Cycling Series

Crystal Lake City Council members approved funding and road closures to bring the high-profile bicycling event to the city in July.

  Crystal Lake will be the destination for one leg of the Prairie State Cycling Series in July. City Council members on Tuesday night voted in favor of contibuting $9,000 from the city's general fund towards the race, which would traverse through Crystal Lake's historic downtown area. The money will go directly to the McHenry County Convention and Visitor's Bureau, which is expected to match the contribution using a state grant. Council member Ellen Brady Mueller, who said she fully supported the event but could not justify taking money from the city's fund, was the sole council member to vote against the measure. Mueller said she preferred to use money from the city's lodging tax reserves fund. While the council discussed taking money …

CCM Tigers JV Hockey Battles for State Title

Combined hockey team representing Crystal Lake Central, McHenry and Dundee-Crown high schools faces Rockford on Wednesday night in Blackhawk Cup game.

  The CCM Tigers JV Hockey team has had very successful season. The team ended the year in first place in the Illinois High School Hockey Leauge- North Central Division. And, tonight the Tigers will battle Rockford for the state title in the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois (AHAI) State Hockey Championships. CCM Tigers Hockey has two squads - a varsity and junior varsity team. Although the club carries the Tiger name and logo, it is a combined team made of players who attend Crystal Lake Central, McHenry and Dundee-Crown high schools.
