Pro Baseball Pick 'Em Contest Winner Announced

Patch user "mp" guessed that the teams would combined for 33 runs, two fewer than the actual total of 35.

Editor's note: Due to an oversight, the winner of this contest was incorrectly announced on Tuesday. We sincerely regret the error. It shouldn’t be surprising that most entrants in Patch’s Pro Baseball Pick ‘Em Contest did not give the batters enough credit in making their selections. Milwaukee outscored Chicago 18-17 in the three-game series over the weekend, and few participants counted on 35 total runs from the teams battling for last place in the division. By guessing the teams would score 33 runs (Brewers 19, Cubs 14), Patch user "mp" was chosen to win the $100 gift card good for pro baseball apparel. Thanks to everyone who participated. Enjoy the rest of the baseball season!

Is Your Young Baseball Player Practicing Too Much?

Medical experts who treat Chicago White Sox players will discuss over practicing during Thursday's free webinar.

Practice and lift weights before class begins, practice after school, and play games during the week and on the weekends. Of course, when school's out it's time to play all summer. But how much is too much? Some of the nation’s leading sports medicine specialists and athletic trainers will address that question during a free public webinar at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10. The webinar is open to all athletes, parents, athletic trainers and coaches. Medical experts who treat Chicago White Sox players will discuss the significant rise in shoulder and elbow injuries among young athletes who use repetitive overhead movements and discuss prevention strategies. Brian Ball, assistant athletic trainer for the Chicago White Sox, will team up for the …

National Golden Gloves Didn’t Play By The Rules

USA Boxing considered shutting down tournament held recently in Nevada.

Officials at the National Golden Gloves Tournament didn’t use the required Olympic-style electronic scoring system and not all bouts had rounds that went the required three minutes. “We could have canceled the event, as USA Boxing sanctions it,” said Anthony Bartkowksi, the executive director of USA Boxing. The National Golden Gloves Tournament, made up of regional champions from around the country, took place April 29 through May 5 in Mesquite, Nev.    Bartkowski said in a letter—posted online April 23—the National Golden Gloves Tournament should be used by amateur boxers to get ready for international competition, including the Olympics. That means using international rules in the qualifiers to get fighters ready, he said. But this year…

What To Do If The FVC Changes Again?

Trojans coaches discuss their thoughts on Johnsburg possibly leaving the Fox Valley Conference.

Over the past month, it has been reported that Johnsburg is looking to leave the Fox Valley Conference which would put the conference back at 13 teams if the Skyhawks were to bolt back to the Big Northern Conference. I took the opportunity to ask some coaches at Cary about what the conference should do if the conference goes back to 13 teams and if the conference should go to 16 teams instead of just looking for another 14th team. Softball coach Tammy Olson said that it probably wouldn’t have a major impact in her opinion. “It (would) be hard but it really wouldn’t affect our side of the conference,” Olson said. “It really doesn’t affect us that much but a lot depends on who would come in and that is totally a superintendent’s discussion …

Cary Promoter Hosts First Boxing Show

Paul Jonas says despite a low turnout Saturday evening, he’s planning another fight night in June.

An optimist might say that the banquet hall was half-full during the amateur boxing show Saturday night at a Banquet hall in Lakemoor. Cary resident Paul Jonas, a promoter putting on his first amateur boxing show, is an optimist and he said Saturday was the first of many fight nights to come. “I’m all in,” Jonas said. “It’s not quantity that counts. It’s quality.” Many sitting ringside at Lakemoor Banquets, including boxing coaches, saw an exciting night of boxing and offered rave reviews. “I’m happy with this venue,” said Tony Prignits, a boxing coach with the Pug’s Boxing Club in Crystal Lake. “Tonight you saw even matchups and exciting boxing. For Paul’s first time around, it was a very good show.  Things like this need time to catch on…
