Senior earned salutatorian honors with a 4.533 grade point average.
Community High School District 155 announced Margaret Schlofner, of Crystal Lake, earned salutatorian honors for the Class of 2013 at Prairie Ridge High School. Schlofner was actively involved in musicals at Prairie Ridge in Crystal Lake and plans to pursue a major in opera vocal performance. None of the students were seriously injured, according to the Northwest Herald.
A fifth grade picnic held inside the gymnasium at Algonquin Lakes Elementary School Thursday morning ended with six children being sent to area hospitals with minor injuries after an inflatable slide tipped over, said Gary Chester, a District 300 safety officer. Emergency officials were called to Algonquin Lakes,1401 Compton Drive in Algonquin, at 12 p.m. Thursday, according to an Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District press release. The accident occurred when several children climbed up the slide at one time, the slide started to sway and then tipped over, Chester said. Highcrest Middle School has broken the Guinness World Record for most twins in a single grade.
Highcrest Middle School is seeing double. The Wilmette school announced this week that it had broken the Guiness World Record for Most Twins in a Single Grade, with 23 sets of twins. Approximately 10 percent of the 5th grade class can claim the record as a twin. The previous record was 16 sets of twins. Luke and Ryan Novosel, dedicated readers of the Guinness Book, discovered that they could break the record when reading the book one night. "The boys were reading one Sunday night and started discussing the many sets of twins right in our neighborhood," Mike Novosel, Luke and Ryan's Dad, said. Eight high school seniors will compete for the title of Mr. Cary Grove 2013 during the 6th Annual Mr. CG Showcase this Tuesday. The competition - which focuses on the talents of the contestants - is set for 5:30 p.m. May 21, at Cary-Grove High School, 2208 Three Oaks Rd., Cary. The contestants will attempt to wow the crowd and judges with their individual talents. "This event is sure to provide some fantastic entertainment and certainly amuse audience members," a CG Student Council press release states. "Cary-Grove invites any and all community members to attend this annual act and hopes to see many come out to support our Cary-Grove seniors." The grand prize is a $1,000 scholarship. The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (once a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. On the seventh day of practice, players can participate in five hours of full contact drills wearing full pads, according to the IHSA. However, no single practice can exceed …
