The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Bobtwo April 23, 2014 at 12:35 am
It's about time. In my opinion the affirmative action ruling has destroyed the higher educationRead More system in this country, A college diploma is not worth the paper it's written on any longer. In the old days the cream was allowed to raise to the top as the saying goes and that way you insured that you had the best. That is what made this country and its educational system so good. Eventually the minorities would have been part of that cream and would become the best of the best.

2 observations: race in my opinion is not a disadvantage. poverty is. and poverty affects people ofRead More all colors--so colleges can take into account challenges in life--but being the son of michael jordan shouldnt grant him an easier admissions process simply because of skin pigmentation. 2) people also need to understand that the system in place does in fact result in diversity that we should all want. New Yrk Times about a year ago ran an article on peter stuyvesant high school--an elite school in manhattan that changed it admission policy to strictly merit. the result was 1 black student 95% asian. 1% hispanic 3 % white. Im not really sure that is a desirable outcome either. going to college is not just about attending bio 101. its interacting with a diverse student body that can also be considered an education. Colleges should not in my opinion adopt a strict meritocratic admissions process--- hardship , poverty, challenges should be considered. I get why people dont want racial preferences-- but i also get why people may regret what they wished for.
dwayne roberson April 23, 2014 at 06:02 am
Affirmative Action was the Planners foolhardy attempt to fix racism with racism. It is indicative ofRead More a pay back attitude apparent in Holder and Obama. This does not advance the actual state of equality. It does perpetuate the bitterness that the race industry and Democrat party rely on for power. A return to colorblind meritocracy is all that can really be fair and equal.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Donna Westbrook April 23, 2014 at 05:56 am
There are children, that simply will never get A's in anything. The standard set in college IRead More believe is that you must get a c in your major, they don't request that one become an honor student to succeed. The public school system is requiring of children to be smarter and better in grade school than in COLLEGE! This is asinine. On the other hand, I wouldn't wish the life of serving fries, or picking up trash on anyone, unless it was their choice, and I would try to encourage them to like something else, at the same time :) I say that as having been in similar work. I just started college 3 weeks ago. I am 59. having most of my life in food service, it can teach one a lot, but at the same time, really be a greasy yucky job.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 06:10 am
The Core is developmentally inapproriate in the younger grades. It expects abstract thinking beforeRead More children reach the age where they are capable of it. It expects written paragraphs in math, in first grade. Stephen Colbert does a great piece on the common core teaching children important skills for the workplace - math, and passive-aggressive not writing. Then the core plateaus. It slows down particularly in STEM subjects. Right now, the students being "field tested" in the upper grades are forced to take the math standard for their GRADE - even if they took Algebra two years ago. Thats just stupid. If you are not testing what they are taught, why test? Also, how does ANY standardized testing help individual students and teachers? The test is given around now. Then it is field trips and movies and Shakespeare's birthday party the rest of the year, then the scores come out in the summer. The teachers will not have the same students the next year. The PARCC test does not even break the test down, so teachers can know that the students they had last year did badly, but they wont know on which sections or why. The kid does not have a 'diagnosis of deficiencies to be worked on" follow him (not that they ever did), so how does it help the kid? How do they work on areas they are shaky on, if they are n ot told anything other than "you failed" or "you are not proficient"
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 06:45 am
Also, colleges are weighing in. Stanford has been very vocal in saying that the common core does notRead More prepare anyone for a STEM major in college, certainly not at stanford. But other colleges, even community colleges, are worried, because by defining a common core diploma as "college and career ready", they are REQUIRED to offer credit-bearing courses to anyone carrying a CC degree. But they have seen the standards, and believe that those students who complete the minimum CC standards, will still require remediation, but now they will have to offer credit for it.

Why doesn't Obama get all of his Hollywood elite buddies aka Jay Zee, Byonce , Springsteen, etcRead More (you get the picture - almost everyone) to do a benefit concert to raise money for his library? Obama may not have anything to do with the "bidding process" but he could step up and say thanks but no thanks - I'll raise the money on my own instead of watching his programs get cut in our indebt state. I just paid my Illinois taxes and it sickens me to think it's going to a 100 mil Obama Library . we need real solutions here and I'm afraid Illinois has a long road ahead with all the throwing stones back and forth . Mine may not be the best solution to fund the library but at least it's pathing a way towards thinking about solutions instead of political mudslinging. Come on people - our politicians don't come up with the solutions - we have to!

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. Netflix is weak but is a fine alternative to cable for now. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt
Michael Brennick April 22, 2014 at 05:46 pm

Netflix is hands down the best deal going, and it has been a bargain for YEARS. I guess theRead More nonsensical whiners who complain about a long-delayed, $2 a MONTH increase are worried it will cost them a (partial) SINGLE LATTE. Utterly ridiculous.

When someone like Seer starts spewing it causes me to wonder if he's just some ignorant kid tryingRead More to get reactions out of adults or if he's just stupid. After going through some of the 12 other comments he's put on other articles in the last 24 hours it is apparent it is both. I apologize to everyone else for provoking even one more comment out of that imbecile. That said, there is no question that there have been abuses in the pension systems (especially the teacher one with the huge end of career bumps) but I still think it is unfair to blame the rank and file people in that system for what is wrong with the financial status of this state. It goes SO much deeper than that. You can be against pensions and want to eliminate them or whatever you want but take away the biggest incentive for going into professions like those where you make less money than similarly educated private sector employees and you are going to have a major shortage (especially of teachers) much more quickly than you think. Be careful what you wish for.

@ George, I would love to hear what state your moving to. I'm just tired of the same old crap thatRead More will continue no matter who gets in. I'm in Oswego and the school district is $800 million in the hole. They've spent like a bunch of drunken sailors with not much to show for it. My taxes are more than my PMI each month. We're having to give our homes away just to move.........This ? goes out to anyone. Has Rauner said anything about not collecting a pension from the state if he wins Governor? I've heard nothing and to me that's part of the problem, please share if you know differently. God help us all!!!

About that library-think it will be filled with graffiti and out of control theft by a certainRead More segment of the gangbangers, flashmob, driveby shooter, grammar school dropout, gun-toting druggie type?
Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:10 am
@Greg Smith - LOL. More nonsense from the Rush crowd. Millions of blacks who are just asRead More disadvantaged as your scumbag gang banger buddies don't drive around shooting up their neighborhoods. You are also, clearly a racist. There are millions of white Americans who aren't born into money and who are unemployed. You should be thankful that we still have a war on drugs. Legalize drugs remove your profits and all of your homies are going to be unemployed and no Ford Foundations to give you grants.
Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:25 am
I should have said no Ford Foundation grants. There will always be foundations giving out grants.Read More Hopefully they won't do as the Ford Foundation did and give a grant to Jeff Ford and his gang.
Edward Andrysiak April 22, 2014 at 01:09 pm
Well, here comes more get rid of the guns talk. You seldom hear why the gangs are at war. The reasonRead More is market share. It's about money. That is how they support themselves. So, let's concentrate on removing what the fight over...drug sales, prostitution and the like. Rid the neighborhoods of that and there will be less to fight over. Squeeeeeze their profits down to zero and there will be less violence!

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I have to take off my flippin' shoes and get patted down, but apparently you can just walk up and plant a bomb in the wheel well.
april ann April 22, 2014 at 12:30 pm
I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Must have been a flat chested female who complained.... remember folks, "Never look down onRead More anyone unless you have a good view of the cleavage"..... And where in hell did all these religious creeps come from? What's religion got to do with staring at her cleavage anyway?
Brian Kari April 22, 2014 at 11:27 pm
can all the religious people go away? the story was about some girl at Disneyland, who apparently,Read More according to some older Disney employee found whatever she was wearing on top, inappropriate. unfortunately, Melissa, large chested women do have a tendency to slide out of some types of clothing, and you may not have even noticed. The "older guy" might have been trying to do you a favor. Just a hunch, from an old guy (who used to have a very large breasted girlfriend.)

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It's like, "what did YOU do to help these people?" Same as you - nothing.

It is truly disturbing that there is more than one judge in Peoria willing to sign their name to aRead More warrant that sweeps up every device with a built-in memory to address tweets that are open communication.
