UPDATE: Winter Weather Advisory Extended Until Midnight

UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Chicago has extended the Winter Weather Advisory until midnight Wednesday. 

Periods of light snow will continue throughout the night with another 1 to 2 inches of snow possible for McHenry County. 

In areas south and southeast of Chicago, the advisory has been extended until 6 a.m. Thursday.

In Lake and Cook County (adjacent to Lake Michigan), the advisory has been replaced by a Winter Snow Warning. The warning is effective until 3 p.m. Thursday, where lake effect snow could total 10 inches of accumulation, according to the NWS.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, for McHenry County, according to the National Weather Service-Chicago.

Snowfall is expected to increase in intensity Wednesday morning and continue throughout the afternoon before ending early in the evening, according to the National Weather Service. 

Snow accumulation totals through Wednesday afternoon will likely range between 4 to 8 inches. Isolated areas with higher accumulations are possible. 

Motorists should prepare for snow covered roadways and limited visibility, the NWS stated.  

The advisory includes McHenry, Kane, Lake, Cook, Boone, DeKalb, Ogle, Lee, Kendall, Will and Porter counties. Lake and Cook counties also are under a lake effect snow watch through Thursday afternoon.
