UPDATE: Winter Weather Advisory for Friday and Saturday

More snow and strong winds prompt a Winter Weather Advisory for McHenry County effective Friday through Saturday morning.

UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. The Winter Weather Advisory has been extended to 9 a.m. Saturday.

-------------------------

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for McHenry County effective from 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, through 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

The advisory includes Boone, Lake, Kane, Cook and several other counties in Northern Illinois.

Southwest winds will increase today to 25 to 35 mph gusting up to 45 mph early Friday afternoon. Light snow is expected to begin falling, increasing in intensity Friday night. One to 3 inches of snow accumulation is expected, according to the NWS.

The strong winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, and conditions likely will worsen with the addition of falling and accumulating snow later Friday afternoon and evening. Roads may become snow covered and hazardous - particularly in open areas.

The wind and snow will cause significantly reduced visibility, the NWS warns.

Motorists should use caution when driving, especially in rural areas.
