Winter Storm Warning Issued Saturday

A winter storm watch has been upgraded to a warning for McHenry County starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday. 

Meanwhile, a freezing rain advisory, which was supposed to expire this afternoon (Friday), has been extended until 7 p.m. for the county, according to the National Weather Service. 

A light freezing rain is expected to continue through the early evening as temperatures hover around or below freezing. A glaze of up to a few hundredths of an inch could impact area roads and walkways making for slippery conditions for motorists and pedestrians, according to the NWS. 

A wintry mix is expected to develop Saturday afternoon and will become all snow and sleet by Sunday evening. Heavy periods of snow are expected overnight Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. 

Freezing rain also could continue for portions of the area later into the night, according to the NWS. 

Between four to eight inches of snow is expected by Sunday afternoon. With heavy snow and sleet expected to accumulate on area roads and could make for dangerous driving conditions Saturday night into Sunday. 

In addition, heavy winds on Sunday could cause blowing and drifting snow in open areas. The National Weather Service recommends only traveling in an emergency for those in the warning area as condition could make driving hazardous or impossible.
