UPDATE: McHenry County Under Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The warning is in effect until 5:15 p.m.

Southern McHenry County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:45 p.m. Friday. 

The storm is expected to hit West Dundee and Sleepy Hollow around 5:15 p.m. Other locations in the warning include, Crystal Lake, Cary, Lake Barrington and Union.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for northern McHenry County  through 5:15 p.m. Friday. 

A severe thunderstorm was located along a line extending from eight miles north of Kenosha, Wis., to seven miles northwest of Silver Lake to nine miles northeast of Clinton. That storm was moving southeast at 25 mph. 

Quarter-sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts are expected in this storm. Hail damage to vehicles is expected and wind damage is also likely to mobile homes roofs and outbuildings, according to the National Weather Service. 

Communities expected to be affected by this storm include: McHenry, Woodstock, Harvard, Wonder Lake and Grayslake.

ORIGINAL STORY: The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch effective until 9 p.m. Aug. 30, for 14 counties in Illinois.

Included in the watch are McHenry, Lake, Kane, Boone and Cook counties, the NWS reports. 

A severe thunderstorm watch does not necessarily mean that severe weather is actually occurring, only that atmospheric conditions have created a significant risk for severe weather to occur.
