Truck driver’s goal is to fight in Chicago Golden Gloves

News from the School of Hard Knocks Boxing Academy

Jeff Mack, a 31-year-old truck driver from Carpentersville, said he’s running out time.

He wants to test himself in the ring.

“I’ve always wanted to be boxer,” Mack said. “That’s always been my dream. Time is running out for me. I’ve got to do it.”

Mack with be fighting in the Chicago Golden Gloves senior novice super-heavyweight division. The tournament starts in March.

Tuesday night for Mack was one of many nights to come getting ready for the tournament, sparring and jumping rope at The School of Hard Knocks Boxing Academy in Crystal Lake.

Gary Dobry, head coach of Pug’s Boxing Club, said about a dozen of his students are training for the tournament.

“You just don’t show up,” Dobry said. “You’ve got to be ready. It takes commitment and a lot of hard work.”

This year’s tournament starts March 7 and will be held for the first time at The Cicero Stadium at 1909 S. Laramie.
