Have You Drawn Your Rain Turtle, Yet?

Perhaps there is a simple solution to the drought?

Most of McHenry County is now listed as "severe drought." Much of the southern part of the Chicagoland area is listed as "moderate drought."

These ladies in Kansas drew a rain turtle in a barren farm field to encourage rain last summer.

Drawing a rain turtle is a ritual, some say tied to Native American origin, that is supposed to bring rain - either instantly or within a few days. To perform the ceremony, one would take a stick and draw the shell of the turtle in the dirt or sand where the rain is wanted.

According to the Kansas ladies in this video, and demonstrators in similar YouTube videos, you should draw the turtle's head facing westward. Then, poke the stick into the turtle's back (so he doesn't crawl away, of course!).
