Wolves Can't Hold Off Knights

Prairie Ridge falls Thursday night to the three-point shooters from Grayslake North

A pair of Haleys are making great progress for the . Actually that's one Haley and one Haleigh.

A six-game winning streak kicked in late during the Wolves' season. It was 7 of 8 heading into Thursday's matchup at Grayslake North.

Haleigh Danek and Haley Ljunggren combined for 34 points in this Fox Valley Conference game. It wasn't enough. Grayslake North hit six three-pointers on the way to 58-48 victory.

"When you don't shoot well and don't come out with energy, this is what happens,'' said Prairie Ridge girls basketball coach Matt Timmerman.

The Wolves (13-14, 5-7) did have a great start from the suddenly potent shooter Danek. She had three 3-pointers at halftime and led all scorers at the break with 13 points. Plus, she is filling in for injured point guard Emily Bruksch. Danek finished with a game-high 19 points.

"Haleigh (Danek) has finally found her shooting touch,'' Timmerman said. "And that's big."

The senior Ljunggren was seemingly all over the court. She finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals.

"Haley (Ljunggren) really gets after it,'' he said. "She just has a knack of finding a way to get to the basket."

On Danek's fourth 3-pointer of the night, the game was knotted at 30-30 with three minutes to play in the third quarter.  And then the Knights hit three consecutive 3-pointers to open a double digit lead.

Marisa Gerstbrein helped with five points and four rebounds. Kelsey Bear added four points and four rebounds.

Recap: Danek had 16 points and Ljunggren added eight in Wednesday's 48-20 romp over Crystal Lake South. On Monday, Ljunggren, Taylor Smerecky and Ashley Fenton each scored 10 points in the 46-38 win over Woodstock North. Gerstbrein (nine points) and Danek (seven points) both helped.

At Huntley: Regional action kicks off on Monday at the Huntley Regional. It's a 6 p.m. start for the Wolves in Huntley. Jacobs is the opponent. Also in this regional is a tough DeKalb squad.
